The following evening.
Gillian had basically finished the paper, sending it via email to York.
Taking advantage of the weekend, she had stayed up all day and night. Her body was giving out, and the baby in her belly seemed to be protesting.
She slumped over the toilet, throwing up for a long time.
Susan rushed over, her face full of concern. "Ma'am, let's go to the hospital. Your health is the most important thing. What if you make yourself seriously ill?"
Gillian pressed her pale lips together. "I know my own body."
She went back to her room. Susan had prepared a bowl of chicken soup and left it on the table, but Gillian couldn't bring herself to eat it. Just the smell made her nauseous.
When Gillian sat down, her limbs felt entirely like jelly, completely drained of strength.
After a moment of thought, she took out her phone and sent Miles a text.
[Miles, I heard you know a doctor overseas who has a very effective type of medication to help maintain a pregnancy.]
He immediately called her back to check on her.
She had thought about it all night. She wanted to keep the baby. After the divorce, she would raise the child on her own.
"Alright, I'll have a friend bring it back from overseas in two days," Miles said, pausing for a moment before adding, "After the baby is born, your life is only going to get harder. If you ever need my help with anything, please tell me."
He was always so gentle and gentlemanly.
"I will. Thank you, Miles."
Just as she hung up, the bedroom door swung open.
York walked in wearing a black dress shirt and trousers. His gaze landed on Gillian's face. "I read the paper."
He enunciated each word clearly, "It's not good enough."
"Hailey is my girlfriend. Her paper cannot be an embarrassment to me."
