Diana trailed after Aaron into the underground parking lot. A low-key but seriously expensive car rolled up. The assistant hurried over to open the door for Aaron, who slipped inside without a word. Diana moved to follow, but before she could, the door was shut right in front of her.
She blinked, caught off guard. “Um?”
The assistant gave her a polite smile. “Ms. Brooks, Mr. Morris doesn’t usually share a ride with anyone. There’s another car for you just behind this one.”
Diana glanced over her shoulder. Sure enough, a sedan was waiting for her.
Well, she was the one who needed to get close to Aaron, so she had no choice but to go along with his rules. She climbed into the back seat of the second car.
As soon as she settled in, Diana grabbed her phone and messaged Amelia.
Diana: [Amelia, I swear I do way too much for you!]
Amelia replied almost instantly with a confused scratching-head emoji.
Diana: [Just wait. I’m about to go undercover and charm the enemy for info!]
Diana braced herself for whatever game Aaron wanted to play. She’d decided she’d go along with whatever he threw at her—keep him talking, get the scoop on Ryan, and only then make her exit.
But as they drove, she noticed something weird. Aaron’s car suddenly turned left at the intersection, while her car kept going straight.
She frowned and leaned forward. “Wait, aren’t we supposed to follow Mr. Morris? His car just turned.”
The assistant in the passenger seat smiled. “No need to worry, Ms. Brooks. Mr. Morris has a private engagement. What he wanted to give you has already been arranged. I’ll take you to pick it up.”
Diana was completely lost. So Aaron wasn’t trying to flirt with her or play some mind game? He just wanted to give her something?
But what could he possibly have for her?
Half an hour later, she got her answer.
The car pulled up outside a fancy villa. A housekeeper was already waiting at the gate, holding an envelope. She handed it straight to Diana.
“Ms. Brooks, please take a look. If the IOU is correct, you can destroy it.”
Donna brought her lunch, which she barely touched before diving back into her stack of medical books.
“Got it!” Amelia’s eyes lit up.
There was still hope for Ryan. An old herbal remedy could work, but it required a rare ingredient called Infant’s Wort—something so scarce it was basically extinct.
Amelia kept digging and finally found out that the last known sighting of Infant’s Wort was at an overseas auction three years ago.
But the buyer was a mystery.
Just then, her phone rang. It was her mentor, Dr. Borgen.
His voice was serious. “Amelia, come to my house right now. There’s someone important who wants to see you.”
“Okay.” She didn’t even hesitate. She trusted Dr. Borgen with her life.
As soon as they hung up, Amelia grabbed her keys and headed out the door.
