Karma Doesn’t Sleep The Revenge Queen Rises novel Chapter 687

The second Amelia stepped out of her car, she could tell something was off. There were two military trucks parked outside her mentor’s building, with uniformed guards at the entrance. Her stomach tightened. This wasn’t a normal visit.

“Amelia,” her mentor’s wife called out as she opened the door. “Come in, quickly.”

Amelia hurried over. “Is someone visiting?”

Her mentor’s wife squeezed her hand, stealing a nervous look at the soldiers outside. She lowered her voice. “It’s Mr. Wilson from Defense and Ms. Tavon from State. They’ve been in the study for an hour. I think they’re here for you.”

Amelia’s mind raced. What could such important people possibly want from her?

“I’ll go see them now,” she said.

“Wait, Amelia.” Her mentor’s wife held her back for a second, her tone soft but serious. “If they ask you to do something you don’t want to, just say no. Don’t worry about me or your mentor, okay?”

Amelia gave her a reassuring smile. “I understand.”

She rushed to the study, knocked lightly, and called, “Dr. Borgen, it’s Amelia.”

“Come in,” came the response.

She pushed open the door. Inside were Dr. Borgen and two strangers—a man and a woman, both in perfectly pressed suits, both with that unmistakable air of authority.

Dr. Borgen stood up. “Amelia, this is Mr. Wilson, and this is Ms. Tavon.”

Amelia nodded politely. “Mr. Wilson. Ms. Tavon.”

Both of them gave her a brief nod, their eyes measuring her before they exchanged a look. Then Ms. Tavon got up and walked over.

“Ms. Sadinton, we don’t have much time, so I’ll get straight to the point,” Tavon said. “Your colleague Greg Robert was coming back from an academic conference with his grad students. They took a ship, but it was hijacked near Gwenny Island. The last GPS ping we got was in the Banda Rainforest conflict zone.”

Dr. Borgen’s voice was steady. “Amelia, you don’t have to do this. This isn’t your fault or your responsibility. Even if you say no, I’m sure there are other ways to get the hostages out.”

Mr. Wilson stepped forward. “Ms. Sadinton, I know this is a terrible position to put you in. But you should know, we have people on the inside, and we’ll do everything possible to keep you safe. The problem is, their base is deep in the rainforest. The terrain is tricky, and we can’t pinpoint the exact location. We also don’t want to risk the lives of the hostages or the villagers nearby.”

Tavon added, “Our department is pushing the local military to help. They’re cooperating as much as they can.”

Amelia took a shaky breath. “Can I have some time to think about it?”

“Of course,” Tavon said, glancing at her watch. “But I’ll need your answer by six tomorrow morning at the latest.”

“Thank you.”

Tavon handed her a card with her contact info. On her way out, she paused at the door and turned back. “Ms. Sadinton, there are three hundred and sixteen people being held—some of them are kids. I know you’re a mom, too…”
