“Tavon, are you seriously trying to guilt-trip a citizen right now?” Dr. Borgen snapped, stepping in front of Amelia, his face dark with anger. He didn’t bother hiding his irritation as he pointed to the door. “You two need to leave. Now.”
Tavon and Mr. Wilson shared a glance. Tavon set a business card on the table. “Ms. Sadinton, we came to you because we’re out of options. But if you really don’t want to go, we’ll respect your choice.”
With that, they left.
Dr. Borgen grabbed the card, ready to toss it in the trash. “If I’d known they came here to send you into a death trap, I never would’ve called you!”
“Wait, please,” Amelia said gently, stopping him. She reached for the card. “Let me keep it. I need a minute to think.”
Dr. Borgen frowned, pain flickering in his eyes. “Amelia, you don’t have to do this. It’s not your responsibility...”
“Robert’s one of the people who got taken,” Amelia said quietly, looking at her mentor, whose hair was now streaked with gray. She gave a small, sad smile. “He was your first student—you’re like a father to him. You’ve always treated us as your own kids. Even if you could turn your back on everyone else, could you really leave Robert behind?”
Dr. Borgen’s expression wavered.
He was terrified for Robert. If they had asked for him instead, he wouldn’t have hesitated to risk his life. But they wanted Amelia. That was something he just couldn’t accept, not for someone so talented, with such a bright future ahead.
“Don’t try to talk me into this. I don’t want you going!” Dr. Borgen’s voice rose, his frustration spilling over. “You just woke up after everything you’ve been through. You’ve already suffered so much, and things are finally getting better for you. Sure, they promise to keep you safe, but once you’re in there, anything could happen. Who knows what you’ll face? Asking you—a young woman—to shoulder all that? I can’t believe they had the nerve to come here and say it to your face!”
Back home, Amelia went straight to her study and opened her old medical books. The most important herb—Infant’s Wort. The last time it showed up was at an overseas auction three years ago. She couldn’t find out who bought it, but the auction house was on Gwenny Island.
Amelia let out a long breath. Even if Tavon hadn’t shown up today, she would’ve had to make a trip to Gwenny Island soon anyway.
She needed to give Tavon her final answer by six in the morning. That meant she had less than a day to get everything sorted.
First, she found Donna.
“Donna, I’m leaving early tomorrow for an important research project. I don’t know when I’ll be back, and it’s a closed facility, so I probably won’t be able to call home every day. I’m counting on you to look after Timmy while I’m gone.”
