Clive’s voice cut through the air, sharp and angry, his face stormy enough to scare anyone. Caroline, who’d been pampered her whole life, had never seen her brother this furious. She shrank back, startled.
“Why are you yelling at me, Clive? I’m just trying to look out for you…” she mumbled, trying to keep her usual sass but sounding way less confident. “Amelia already divorced you. We all saw how cold she was about it…”
“Just shut up!” Clive snapped. “If you and Mom hadn’t gone so far, do you really think we’d be divorced now?”
“Clive!” Caroline shot back, folding her arms and rolling her eyes. “Everything Mom and I did was for your own good! And don’t act like you didn’t know what we were planning. It’s fine to play the gentleman in front of Amelia, but I’m your sister…”
“I said shut up!” Clive was shaking with anger, hand halfway raised as if he might actually hit her.
He stopped himself at the last second.
Caroline stared at him, totally stunned. “You were going to hit me? For Amelia? I went through hell on Tiger Wind Island and you don’t even care how I am!”
She pouted, her voice thick with frustration. “And Felix—he’s always protecting Amelia! When I was locked up, he didn’t even care, but the second Amelia’s in trouble, he runs to save her. Why? I nearly died on Tiger Wind Island for him. What’s Amelia ever done for him?”
She kept venting, completely missing the way Clive’s glare turned icy and clear.
Suddenly he said, “So you hurt Amelia because you were jealous?”
“She deserved it…” Caroline blurted out, then slapped her hand over her mouth.
She glanced at Clive, anxiety creeping in.
“I didn’t hurt her, okay? It was an accident…” she stammered, scrambling to cover herself.
Clive didn’t bother to answer, clearly not believing a word.
“Caroline, you’d better hope Amelia comes back safe.”
No matter how hard Caroline cried the rest of the way, Clive didn’t even look at her. His mind was a mess, worry for Amelia eating at him. Felix was there, so Amelia should be alright. The military was helping too, so maybe they’d have good news soon…
Clive tried to reassure himself, but his frown just got deeper.
When they finally pulled up to the Salmeron estate, Clive froze at the gate. There was a figure standing there—someone who looked eerily like Amelia. Actually, it was almost identical.
Caroline, riding shotgun, went pale and shrieked, “Oh my god… a ghost!”
A ghost in broad daylight? How could Amelia just appear here? Was she back to haunt them?
“Clive, seriously, can’t you raise your standards? Stop letting every random girl crawl into your bed…”
“Caroline!” Clive’s frown deepened.
But Caroline was already out of the car, heading toward the house, not sparing Liana a single glance.
“I’m sorry about that,” Clive said to Liana. “My sister’s… well, she’s been spoiled her whole life. It’s nothing personal, she just…” He trailed off, staring at Liana’s face—so young and so much like Amelia’s. For some reason, he didn’t want to explain further, and changed the subject. “She’s just gotten back from abroad and had a bit of a scare. Thanks for understanding.”
“It’s no trouble,” Liana replied, her smile gentle and understanding. “You’ve helped me out so much, Mr. Salmeron. I’d never take it to heart. If Ms. Salmeron is still shaken up, I actually know a remedy that’s great for calming nerves. I could make some and bring it over, if you like.”
Clive looked surprised. “You know about medicine?”
Liana shrugged modestly. “Not really. I just always liked it. There’s an amazing old doctor in my village, and I used to help him all the time during school breaks. I learned a few things here and there.”
Of course, it was all made up.
But just as she hoped, Liana caught the glimmer of interest in Clive’s eyes. Not the kind you’d have for a pet, but the kind a man has when he’s actually noticing a woman.
