The family Clive connected her with for tutoring had plenty of business dealings with the Salmerons. They weren’t exactly old friends, but they knew a lot about the Salmeron family. Liana, playing it cool, kept nudging the conversation toward Clive’s ex-wife, Amelia, and ended up learning quite a bit.
Turns out, Amelia wasn’t just some genius researcher—she was also an incredible doctor. Clive had stomach issues for years, and Amelia used to take care of him, making sure he was okay. Liana even overheard the lady of the house chatting with her husband in the study, saying that Liana looked so much like Amelia—especially from behind, their figures were almost identical.
“Being eager to learn is a good thing,” Clive said with a small smile. “Especially for someone young and pretty like you. If you don’t mind the trouble, I’ll leave the medicine to you. I’ll pay you separately for it.”
“Oh, that’s not necessary,” Liana quickly waved her hands. “You already helped me out with my family, and this tutoring job you recommended pays so well. I should do something for you—it makes me feel better about everything.”
Clive was more than just a stepping stone—he was her ticket up, and she wasn’t going to settle for small favors. She wanted to go as far as she could.
Clive just smiled. “Alright.”
Liana went on, “Mr. Salmeron, the family you sent me to is really nice. They paid me three months’ wages in advance since you recommended me. I’d love to treat you to dinner as a thank you. Are you free anytime soon?”
Clive thought for a second. “Tomorrow. I have to meet a friend later today.”
“Great,” Liana replied, all smiles, not pushing for more details. “Could you drop me at the subway station on your way out? It was a longer walk from their house than I expected—your neighborhood is huge.”
Clive glanced down at her heels and laughed. “It’s nearly a mile. Not bad. Hop in.”
Liana reached for the back door, but Clive stopped her. “Sit up front. What, you actually see me as your driver?”
Liana hesitated. “I just thought Mrs. Salmeron might mind…”
Clive shrugged. “Don’t worry about her. It’s my car—she doesn’t get to decide who sits where.”
Liana circled around to the passenger side. Just before getting in, she looked up at the old Salmeron house. Caroline was still nearby, glaring at her through the fancy stonework on the wall.
Out of Clive’s sight, Liana shot Caroline a quick, smug smile—there and gone in a flash.
Caroline hadn’t even processed it before Liana was already in the car. The door closed and Clive drove off, smooth as ever.
“That shameless brat! Flirting with my brother and then acting all high and mighty with me!” Caroline’s anger was boiling over. Amelia, that eyesore, wasn’t even gone yet, and now there was someone trying to be her replacement, just to spite her.
Caroline screeched, her eyes practically shooting flames. “You tramp! If I can’t get rid of Amelia, you think I can’t deal with you? Just wait and see!” She snatched up her phone and called one of her wild friends. “Do me a favor—look into this woman for me. I think my brother’s being targeted by some scheming girl!”
Clive really did drive Liana to the subway station.
