After dropping the kids off at school, Clive headed straight for the office. On the way, he called Uda.
“How’s everything coming along?”
“Don’t rush me, Salmeron. There’s trouble on the island. No one’s ever broken into the village before, but yesterday, someone came and took people away…”
Clive’s grip tightened on the steering wheel. “Who did they take? Was it Amelia?”
“I’m not sure yet. They took a man and a woman...”
A man and a woman.
Could it be Amelia and Felix?
Clive felt his heart clench with worry. “Find out who they are, as soon as possible. Especially the woman.”
“That… isn’t really part of my job, Salmeron…” Uda sounded a bit uneasy.
Clive knew what he was getting at. His voice grew low. “I’ll pay extra.”
Almost instantly, Uda’s mood flipped. “Thank you, Salmeron! Working for you is always an honor. I have plenty of contacts on the island. I’ll get you an answer by tomorrow, at the latest.”
Clive didn’t bother to respond to Uda’s sucking up and just hung up.
Back at the company, Clive powered through his paperwork, then went straight into a meeting with his senior team. The whole time, he looked so grim that everyone else felt like they were sitting on needles, barely daring to breathe until the meeting finally ended.
In his office, Clive slumped into his chair and asked, sounding tired, “Anything for lunch?”
Aiden checked his schedule. “Nothing work-related, sir, but you do have a personal appointment…”
Clive didn’t look up. “What personal appointment? Cancel it.”
Seeing Clive’s mood, Aiden kept it short. “Understood. I’ll tell Ms. Jenkins you’re tied up with an important lunch meeting.”
Ms. Jenkins.
Clive paused for a second. “Liana?”
“Yes, she said her name’s Liana.” Aiden nodded. “She told the front desk she had an appointment with you, so they passed the message to me, but you were in that meeting, so I held off.”
Clive remembered. He really had agreed to meet Liana today.
“When did she get here?”
“I didn’t want to bother you. I figured I’d just wait downstairs.”
“How long have you been here?”
She lied without blinking. “Not long. I just got here.”
Clive glanced at the table. Two empty coffee cups sat there, plain as day.
“You’ve already gone through two cups of coffee, and you’re telling me it’s only been a few minutes?”
Liana gave in with a laugh. “Busted, detective. Okay, two hours. But I didn’t mind—I had time to read up on the company. Figured it’d help for when I start looking for internships after I graduate.”
Clive smiled at that. “Oh? You want to intern here?”
“Getting into Salmeron Corp would be ideal,” Liana answered honestly. “But I do have a couple backup options.”
One of Clive’s eyebrows lifted. “So this isn’t your only option?”
His tone was teasing, but underneath there was something just a little more. With eyes like his, he didn’t need to try and be charming—a single glance could feel like he was already stringing you along.
Liana’s heart skipped a beat but her head kept her grounded. Falling for a guy like Clive? She already knew how that would end—with her getting burned. She was smart enough to know that for her, this was just business—not love.
