Liana met Clive’s gaze head-on, his famously dreamy eyes practically dripping with charm, and gave him just the right hint of a gentle, inviting smile.
“Of course I want to work at Salmeron Corporation,” she said, her voice light and playful. “But that depends on whether I’m good enough to actually make it through.” She gave him a mischievous little grin. “Mr. Salmeron, can you promise me one thing?”
Clive could already guess what was coming. She wanted him to pull strings.
“I can,” he answered without hesitation.
She raised her brows. “You agreed before you even heard what I’m asking.”
Her innocent act only made Clive like her more. She looked so much like Amelia from back in the day, but with even more spark, more energy—enough to make him feel lighter around her.
“Alright, let’s hear it,” he replied, playing along.
Liana smiled. “When I come for the interview, you can’t be on the panel. If you are, I’ll probably get the giggles.”
That threw him off for a second. He’d thought she’d ask for something big. He burst out laughing. “That’s it?”
“Yup. You promised, no backing out,” she pressed.
His smile widened. “Deal.”
A sleek white sports car rolled up out front and, from the driver’s seat, Caroline stepped out—head-to-toe Chanel, radiating rich-girl attitude. The first thing she spotted was her brother’s back. The second was Liana standing in front of him, practically glowing with happiness.
Caroline nearly exploded. “That little tramp! She actually had the nerve to show up at my brother’s company? She’s gonna regret this.”
She stormed into the lobby, heels clicking for maximum effect.
“Clive!” she yelled, loud enough to turn every head in the room.
Clive’s smile faded as she approached. “I thought we agreed you’d stay home and rest.”
She latched onto his arm, narrowed her eyes at Liana, and forced a sweet smile that didn’t reach her eyes.
“Ms. Jenkins, isn’t Baybridge University keeping you busy with internships and your thesis? Or do you plan to skip work straight after graduation and just mooch off a man? Maybe try not to embarrass yourself or your university. And the Salmeron family doesn’t just let anybody in, you know.”
Everyone in the lobby could hear. The hush was deafening.
Clive’s tone went cold. “Caroline, that’s enough.”
She pouted. “Come on, big brother, I know a gold-digger when I see one. She’s from the sticks, her family has nothing, and she’s been angling for a chance to get close to you.”
She turned and shouted, “Security! Why did you even let someone like her in? Get her out of here, now!”
Clive clamped down on her arm, and you could tell he was doing his best to keep his anger under control.
“Caroline, quit it.”
Liana dropped her head, biting her lip, looking like she was about to cry but trying desperately to hold it in.
“I’m sorry, Ms. Salmeron,” she said softly. “Maybe I gave you the wrong impression. Mr. Salmeron did me a huge favor, and I just wanted to say thank you. That’s all, I promise...”
“Cut the act!” Caroline snapped, her temper flaring even higher at Liana’s pitiful look.
