The elevator doors slid shut and carried them down to the underground parking garage.
“Did Caroline hurt you back there?” Clive glanced sideways at Liana, concern flickering in his eyes.
“No.” Liana shook her head quickly.
Clive clearly didn’t believe her, but he let it go. When the elevator stopped, he stepped out with his long stride and Liana hurried after him toward a white Bentley parked nearby.
This time, Liana was smart enough to get in the passenger seat without needing a hint.
But Clive didn’t start the car right away.
“Let me see your hand.”
Liana blinked, a little confused, but held it out. Clive gently rolled up her sleeve, exposing a fresh bruise where Caroline had grabbed her.
His brows drew together. “She really doesn’t know when to stop.”
Caroline had pulled the same stunt on Amelia before...
“It’s not Ms. Salmeron’s fault,” Liana said, pulling her hand back and tugging her sleeve down, trying too hard to sound casual. “I just ran into something earlier. Ms. Salmeron just pressed on it by accident and it hurt, so I flinched.”
Clive didn’t look convinced.
“You don’t have to cover for her,” he said, his tone soft but serious. “Trust me, I know what she’s like. I won’t let something like this happen again. I promise.”
“Oh, and—” Liana reached into her bag and pulled out a hefty package of herbs. “I went by the pharmacy and got this for Ms. Salmeron. I figured I’d drop it off. The clinic receipt’s in there too—you can check it if you want.”
Clive recognized the packaging. It was from Adrian’s place—nowhere near here and definitely not ‘on the way’ like Liana claimed.
He looked at her, his features softening. “Thank you. I’ll make sure Caroline drinks it.”
“Actually, maybe don’t mention I brought it,” Liana said quickly. “Ms. Salmeron isn’t my biggest fan. If she knows it’s from me, she might refuse to take it altogether…”
Clive’s lips curled into a small smile. “Alright. I’ll tell her I had someone else prepare it.”
Liana’s eyes lit up as she smiled back. “Hopefully, it helps her feel better.”
“Just the thought is more than enough.”
Liana’s smile grew even sweeter.
She couldn’t wait for Caroline to get a real taste of her ‘thoughtfulness.’
Tara was there, looking worried, and two guards glared at Amelia like she’d caused the commotion. Neither of the men spoke her language; they waited while Tara translated.
“Ms. Sadinton—”
“Tara, what’s happening?” Amelia cut in. “Did Tatum catch my friend? What were those gunshots?”
“No,” Tara answered quickly. “It’s the monster. He took something, now he’s foaming at the mouth and turning purple. They’ve called every doctor they know, but no one can help him! Tatum completely lost it and started shooting into the air—he said if they don’t save the monster, he’ll kill every one of them…”
Amelia’s mind raced—this was her chance. She grabbed Tara’s arm, voice urgent. “I’m a doctor. Tell Tatum I’m the best doctor he’s got right now!”
Tara spoke hurriedly to the guards. They exchanged tense looks, then one turned and hurried away.
“He’s going to tell Tatum,” Tara explained.
Minutes later, the guard returned and motioned for Amelia to come with them.
Obviously, she didn’t need a translation. This was her moment.
She followed them down winding paths—every tree and trail looked the same, and she struggled to memorize the route. Secret Room 1 was so well hidden it was actually built behind a waterfall at the edge of a cliff.
They slipped behind the waterfall, stepping into a dim tunnel. As the tunnel opened up and light filtered in, Amelia’s breath caught in her throat at what she saw inside...
