“Amelia.” Felix’s voice was unusually quiet and heavy. He looked at her with a mix of pity and helplessness in his eyes. “There’s news. I just got it—it’s about Ryan. Do you want to know now, or would you rather wait and check yourself when you get back?”
Amelia forced a wobbly smile. “Is this about Ryan proposing to me? Is he waiting at the airport with some grand surprise? And my dad—was it Ryan who found him? Did he send me here on purpose so we could reunite?”
Felix just looked at her in silence.
Amelia was too smart not to know what was really going on. She just didn’t want to face it.
Kit let out a soft sigh, slipped out of the room, and quietly shut the door behind him.
“Amelia.” Felix stepped right in front of her. “You know why Ryan went through all that trouble, don’t you?”
“I don’t know!” Amelia’s voice broke as she screamed. Everything she’d been holding back finally burst out.
For a second, the world went black. She collapsed.
In her dream, she was back at college, on the first day of freshman year. She walked into a buzzing classroom for introductions.
“Hi, everyone. I’m Amelia. You can just call me Amelia…”
From the back row, Ryan—with his messy blond hair—lifted his head, groggy from a nap.
Their eyes met, and this time, she found herself walking over. “Hey. Mind if I sit here?”
Ryan smiled, pulling out the chair for her, but as she reached for it, the world around her started to fall apart. Even Ryan’s face was breaking into pieces.
She tried to hold onto him, desperate and flailing, but he just slipped through her fingers.
…
“Ryan!” Amelia gasped, sitting straight up. She was in a hospital bed. Felix was sitting nearby, worn out, his eyes red and shadowed by a rough stubble.
“Amelia…”
She turned away from him, wanting nothing but her phone. “Where’s my phone? Give me my phone.”
Felix handed it over. She dialed Ryan’s number frantically. He’d always picked up on the first ring. This time, it rang out to silence.
Barefoot, Amelia stumbled off the bed and bolted for the door. “Ryan… I have to go home. I have to see Ryan!”
Felix rushed after her, trying to stop her, but she fought him with everything she had.
Finally, Felix had no choice but to grab her, pinning her against the wall.
“Amelia! Snap out of it! You’ve been unconscious for four days, okay? Ryan’s gone. He’s dead, do you get it?”
Amelia bit down hard on Felix’s arm, leaving bloody marks. He didn’t even flinch. When her strength wore out, she let go and collapsed to the floor, empty and defeated.
