Clive’s face changed ever so slightly, but Amelia caught it. She let out a cold, knowing laugh—she’d called it. After all the years she’d known Clive, his thoughts were practically written on his forehead for her.
The cruel twist was, Clive actually cared about family. Just not the family they’d once shared. His loyalty was always to the Salmerons, never to her or their daughter.
“Penny, sweetheart, can you give Daddy and Mommy a little time alone? Maybe put on some music and do your homework for a bit?” Clive’s voice was gentle as he tugged Penny closer, trying to coax her.
Amelia watched, face unreadable. Clive still had Penny’s backpack in his hand—of course he came prepared for this.
Penny glanced from one parent to the other, uncertainty all over her little face, before finally looking to Amelia.
“Okay, Mommy, I’ll go do my homework,” she said quietly.
Amelia forced a smile and brushed Penny’s hair with her fingers. “Good girl. If anything’s tricky, you come and ask Mommy, alright?”
“Okay!” Penny hugged her tiny backpack and wandered over to the desk by the window. She slipped on her headphones, music humming in her ears as she started writing.
Amelia walked over and gently took the headphones off. “Honey, let’s play the music out loud, okay? It’s not good for your ears to wear headphones all the time.”
She shot a glare at Clive. Who lets a kid Penny’s age use headphones like that? Trust Clive not to think it through.
Turning her back on him, Amelia walked out to the balcony. Clive followed, silent.
The balcony door was halfway open. Penny sat in the corner, head down, working on her homework, the music just background noise now. She wouldn’t hear a thing.
Clive looked at Amelia, lips pressed together, something like regret flickering in his eyes. “You’ve really lost weight.”
Amelia gave a short, dismissive laugh. “Whatever shape I’m in is none of your business.”
