Ryan was gone. That meant Clive actually had another shot, didn’t it? He and Amelia had two kids together and more than ten years of history—if that wasn’t an advantage, what was?
Still, Clive hadn’t forgotten the real reason he’d come today.
“Amelia, I know Caroline acted out. She did something terrible to you, and honestly, it’s our fault for spoiling her so much. Tomorrow, I’ll bring her to you. She’ll get on her knees and apologize—whatever you want, yell at her, hit her, it’s all up to you. I swear, the Salmeron family will fully support whatever you decide.” Clive lowered his voice, desperation creeping in. “But could you… please, say nothing to the military? Just this once.”
Amelia just looked at him, stone-faced and silent, and Clive started to panic.
“If the military gets involved, that’s it for Caroline,” he said, his voice shaking just a little. “They’ll ruin her life.”
After finding out Amelia was alive, Caroline had been a complete wreck at home. It hadn’t taken much for Clive to get the truth out of her, and it played out exactly the way he expected.
He was furious at Caroline, of course. But Amelia was still here, still alive. If the military got involved, there was no more room to negotiate. Caroline would go down, hard and fast—probably at least fifteen years in prison. Her life really would be over.
“Amelia, she’s my only sister. She’s also Timmy and Penny’s aunt. I’m begging you, just this once—please give her a chance.”
Amelia actually laughed, but there was nothing warm in it. “Did it cross Caroline’s mind that I’m Penny and Timmy’s mom when she had me thrown out of that helicopter?”
Clive had no words for that.
“Clive, don’t try to guilt-trip me. And drop the fake sympathy. I’m telling the military the truth. However they handle Caroline is for them to decide—she’ll get exactly what she deserves.”
Saying it all left Amelia feeling exhausted. She didn’t have it in her to argue anymore and honestly didn’t want to look at Clive for a second longer. She turned to head inside.
