Laila stayed in the sacred grove until very late before going back to sleep. So when Pearl woke her early the next morning, she was still buried in the thick feather blanket and unwilling to
move.
“Ms. Conlay. Ms. Conlay, wake up!” Pearl’s voice was urgent and low. “That Maris is here! She’s outside causing a scene. We cannot drive her away. If she keeps this up, the whole pack will wake up!”
Laila sat up from the blankets, still groggy, staring blankly for a moment.
She really came?
She pricked up her ears and listened carefully. Sure enough, there was loud shouting outside. It was Maris’s voice.
There were also heavy banging sounds on the door. If she kept making that much noise, Raymond would definitely wake up. He had gotten much better, but harsh, aggressive voices still frightened him badly.
Laila’s first instinct was to jump up, shift into wolf form, and tear that woman into pieces.
But she held herself back.
To be honest, she felt a little curious. Why had Maris come looking for her? Was she here to beg her to stop Victoria from marrying Holt?
Besides, she still had not figured out how to break the protection around the Stillmoon Sanctum. Even if she wanted to attack, she could not.
“Bring her to the sitting room,” Laila said, pushing aside the blanket and stepping barefoot onto the wool carpet. “I will change and be there in a while.”
Pearl thought seeing that woman at all was bad luck, but there was no other choice. Maris had the nerve to run to the Stillmoon Sanctum and seek protection. With the Moon Goddess’s mark on her, no one could harm her.
“Fine, I will bring her in.” Pearl turned and walked out, muttering under her breath, “What a terrible way to start the day first thing in the morning…”
Laila did not bother dressing up. She simply put on an everyday dark gray wool dress and

draped a silver fox fur cloak over it. It was bitterly cold today. The sky was so dark that it seemed snow might fall at any moment.
That was good. After the next snowfall, Raymond could go outside and have a snowball fight.
She walked through the corridor toward the sitting room.
When she pushed the door open, Maris was already sitting there.
She wore a deep–wine red velvet dress, with dark fox fur trimming the collar and sleeves. A thin veil of the same color covered her face, leaving only her eyes visible. A pair of blood red coral earrings hung beneath her ears, swaying slightly in the dim light.
To be fair, the outfit did give her a certain noble elegance.
But those eyes…
Her cold, sharp eyes fixed on Laila as she walked in.
She sat there. She neither rose to greet Laila nor spoke. She simply followed Laila’s movement with her gaze.
Laila had no patience for unnecessary small talk. She sat down across from her and went straight to the point. “Why are you here? What do you want?”
Maris’s voice carried a strange, icy tone. “Holt is going to marry Victoria from Blackrock Pack. Do you know that?”
“What does that have to do with me?”
“Nothing to do with you?” Maris let out a cold chuckle. “Of course. You are about to marry Samuel. Why would you care about Holt anymore? But Laila, let me ask you something. If Samuel did not exist, would you still love Holt?”
Laila’s eyes turned cold as irritation rose within her. “Did you come here just to say this? What answer are you trying to get from me?”
Maris’s words came fast and rude. “I want the truth. If Samuel did not exist, would you still love Holt? Even after dissolving the mate bond, would you still hope that he would come to take you back? After leaving Ironclaw Pack, did you ever regret it? Did you ever feel jealous of me? Did you ever hate me?”
Laila could not help frowning.
She looked at Maris’s slightly reddened eyes and suddenly felt that something was wrong. This
