“Laila, come back within two hours. I’ll have everything ready by then,” Rowan instructed.

“Alright. Thank you, Dr. Sagewood.”

I forced a smile, then shifted into my wolf form and ran straight for Frostwind Pack.

But I had no confidence at all. I didn’t know whether Samuel would be angry when he learned I wanted to postpone the mating ceremony.

He’d spent so long preparing for it. The invitations had already gone out. King Vaughn and the Alphas of the major packs would all be there. And now, the day before the ceremony, I was asking to delay it.

Moon Goddess, I didn’t even want to think about it anymore. I had no idea how I was supposed to bring it up. The whole way there, I kept struggling over what my first words to Samuel should be.

I nodded to them and stated my purpose plainly. “I need to see Prince Vance.”

The guards immediately led me inside and brought me to the reception hall. Then I waited anxiously for quite a while, until at last footsteps sounded outside the door.

“Ms. Conlay.”

It was Luke, Samuel’s beta. There was no one behind him. I looked past him again and again,

Luke gave me a smile and explained, “I’m sorry, Ms. Conlay. The Alpha had something to attend to and won’t be back until tomorrow.”

“Tomorrow? Are you sure?”

“Yes.”

“Where is he? Or I can go find him now.” If I ran at full speed, I could reach him quickly as long as he wasn’t too far away.

“That wouldn’t be very convenient, Ms. Conlay.”

“There’s nothing inconvenient about it.” I fixed my eyes on him. “If he’s trying to prepare some kind of surprise for me, tell him I don’t need a surprise. I just want to see him now.”

I took a deep breath, my nails digging into my palms. I’d wanted to tell Samuel in person. But since he wasn’t here.

“Luke, I need to tell you something.” I lifted my head. “Tomorrow’s mating ceremony has to be postponed.”

Luke’s expression froze. “What did you say?”

“Pearl’s been poisoned.” I did my best to keep my voice steady. “Dr. Sagewood said Moongleam Lake in Bloodmoon Pack can save her. I have to take her there.”

“Postponed?” His voice shot up sharply. “Ms. Conlay, do you even hear yourself? Every noble is coming to this mating ceremony. Some of the pack Alphas have already arrived in advance. And now you’re saying it has to be postponed? Moon Goddess, I can hardly believe what I’m hearing.”

“I know, but…”

“No, you don’t.” Luke cut me off, his eyes turning sharp. “Ms. Conlay, do you know what those packs outside say about the Alpha? They say he’s insane, that he knows full well your heart belongs to someone else and still rushed to marry you anyway. They say he’s just Holt’s shadow, your second–best choice after you couldn’t have the one you really wanted. The things they say are so ugly I wouldn’t even repeat them in front of you.

“But he never cared about any of that. For the sake of this mating ceremony, he even willingly lay in…”
