Laila’s POV:

Luke froze. “What did you say?”

“I said cancel it.” I looked straight at him. “Tell Samuel I said so. If he wants to be angry, he can come find me himself.”

With that, I turned and walked out. I could vaguely hear Luke calling after me, but I didn’t look back.

It had started snowing again. I shifted into wolf form and plunged into the storm. Pearl was still waiting for me.

By the time I reached Rowan’s cabin, I shifted back and wiped away my tears. Luke was Samuel’s most trusted beta. What he said probably was what Samuel meant.

“Maybe not,” Nita said hesitantly in the back of my mind.

“Whether it is or not, I don’t have time to dwell on it. If he wants to break off the engagement because of this, I can accept that.”

Pearl only had one life. Once it was gone, it was gone. But a mating ceremony could always be postponed and held again later. There was no need to struggle over which mattered more. As for what other people might say, I didn’t care in the slightest.

With that in mind, I walked into the cabin.

Hearing me come in, Rowan looked up at me once, then lowered her head and went back to handling the potion. “You’re back already? Where’s Prince Vance? Is he coming with you?”

“No. He’s not going. He has other matters to deal with.”

That was all I said.

Rowan paused, then nodded. “That makes sense. Postponing a mating ceremony means a lot of explaining. It’s understandable that he’d stay behind to handle things.”

“Mm.”

I gave a vague response and said nothing about the confrontation with Luke. I didn’t want Rowan worrying.

But at the same time, my body felt as though it were being roasted alive. Cold and heat tore through me together, and even the spaces between my bones ached.

I tried to move and found I couldn’t even lift a finger. That damned Moonshade Tear really was exactly what my teacher had said. It could torment a werewolf until he wished he were dead.
