When I woke from my nap and heard that Laila had come by and gotten into an argument with Luke, I practically ran out the door at once. But Laila was already gone. The only one I found was Luke.
“Luke, where’s Laila? Why did she come to see Samuel at a time like this?” I asked the question directly.
Luke looked annoyed. He took a deep breath before answering, “Nothing important. They were just discussing some details of the mating ceremony.”
“Then why were you arguing?”
“Your Highness, I think you must’ve misheard. We weren’t arguing.”
Luke’s face stayed stiff and expressionless. I knew I wasn’t going to get anything out of him, so I didn’t keep pressing. I turned and went back to my room instead.
Whatever. There was no way Laila had come to cancel the mating ceremony.
When I returned, Freya asked softly, “Princess Morgana, is everything going smoothly?”
For the past few days, she’d been hiding in my room. This was Estelle’s idea. She said the one thing Laila would never be able to accept was betrayal from her mate. So as long as I sent Freya to Samuel’s bed on the day of the mating ceremony, Laila would definitely break up with Samuel.
Freya might get to enjoy Samuel’s caresses first, but that didn’t matter. Samuel didn’t love her. He would definitely kill her. I remembered it clearly. Before, there had been a shameless she- wolf who climbed into Samuel’s bed. She died horribly in the end. And that would definitely be Freya’s ending too.
I let out a little huff. “Don’t worry. Tomorrow, I’ll make sure you end up in Samuel’s bed.”
Holt’s POV:
Tomorrow was my mating ceremony, but I couldn’t bring myself to feel happy at all. Because tomorrow was also Laila and Samuel’s mating ceremony. I was going to lose her forever…
“Holt, have you found Freya yet?” Daphne reached out through the mind link.

“No.” I replied the same way.

Freya had been missing for several days. Daphne and Mother were worried something had happened to her, so they’d sent me out to look for her. It happened to suit me just fine. I didn’t want to stay home either.
But I’d already gone to every one of her friends‘ houses and found nothing. No one knew where she’d gone.
By then, the sky had gone fully dark. I tried using the mind link to contact Freya again.
“Where are you? Come home.”
A full minute passed with no reply. Just when I assumed, like before, that there would be no answer, Freya finally responded through the mind link. It was only one short sentence.
“Sorry, Holt. I’m not coming to your mating ceremony tomorrow. I have to go see Samuel.”
“See Samuel? Tomorrow’s his mating ceremony too. Why are you going to see him? Where exactly are you right now?”
I froze for a second, then immediately questioned her, but Freya cut off the mind link on her end. I couldn’t reach her again.
“Damn it. What the hell is she trying to do?” I was furious.
Vick gave a low rumble, then said, “I still think that hooded woman from earlier looked a lot like Laila. That was her scent.”
“Impossible.”
I shook my head and answered inside our shared mind, “Tomorrow is her mating ceremony with Samuel. How could she possibly show up here, driving a carriage like she was heading off on a long journey?” At the time, I hadn’t even dared look too closely. I was afraid I’d lose control and rush over to yank back that hood.
“You’ve got a point,” Vick muttered gloomily.
