I didn’t want to deal with it, but I knew Daphne was right. Maris was crazy. There was nothing she wouldn’t do.

“Alright. I know. I’ll go back and handle it.”

After replying through the mind link, I drew a deep breath and turned toward the wolf den.

When I entered Maris’s room, she was sitting quietly in a chair in the middle of it, looking almost exactly the way Laila had that day when I told her I was going to mark a second Luna. Only now, looking back on it, Laila’s expression had stayed calm the whole time. The only real emotion she’d shown had been sarcasm.

But the way Maris looked at me now, it was full of hatred.

“Maris,” I said. “I know you’ve been wronged. I know I didn’t keep the promise I made to you. But beta Mr. Merona made it clear, in his own tactful way, that this marriage was personally ordered by King Vaughn. I had no way to refuse.”

Maris lifted her head, mockery in her eyes. “No way to refuse? Is that what you told Laila back then too?”

I shook my head. “No. Back then, I told her I loved you, so I was going to make you my Luna.”

At that, Maris suddenly laughed. But without her veil, the smile looked sinister and eerie against the scars on her face.

“And now?” she asked. “Who do you love now?”

I fell silent. I didn’t want to tell her the truth. That would drive her mad and ruin my mating ceremony.

But Maris suddenly turned her face away. “Forget it. I already know the answer. You can go. I won’t cause trouble at tomorrow’s mating ceremony.”

“Thank you,” I said it quietly and started to leave, but Maris called out to stop me.

I turned back and looked down at the thing in her hand, and my wolf eyes narrowed sharply. It was the wedding gift Luna Diana had given Laila and me, that banner woven with the emblems of the Silvermoon Pack and Ironclaw Pack.

I’d had sex with Maris on it countless times. And through the Frost family’s special bloodline, Laila had seen it all with her own eyes.

“I’ve washed it clean. You can take it back to Laila.” She looked at me, her gaze unnaturally calm.
