Samuel’s POV:

The night of ice and fire was finally over.

At sunrise, Greer pushed open the lid of the ice coffin from outside. Blinding light poured in. I narrowed my eyes and sat up. The burning heat inside my body had faded, replaced by a strange sense of lightness. The curse had gone quiet for the time being.

“Ms. Livingston.” I grinned. “I made it through…”

“Something happened, Samuel.”

Greer stood beside the ice coffin, not a trace of a smile on her face. She looked terrifyingly serious.

My beta, Luke, stepped out from behind her, his expression awful.

“Alpha, Laila wants to cancel the mating ceremony.”

“What?”

I stared at him, wondering if I’d heard wrong.

Laila’s POV:

Ever since leaving Rowan’s place, I’d been traveling nonstop with Pearl. The weather was bitterly cold, and heavy snow had started falling. Thankfully, Viola and Stick were with me. They drove off some rogues we ran into on the road, which kept us from losing any time.

After we’d gone on for a while, Viola suddenly said, “Come to think of it, this counts as running away from your wedding, doesn’t it?”

I pressed my lips together.

“It sure does,” Stick said, picking up the thread. “And not just any wedding either. This one’s the biggest event around. Who knows how Prince Vance is supposed to face all those guests by himself, or explain why his Luna vanished. Just thinking about it makes me embarrassed for him.”

I said nothing. I knew what I’d done wasn’t right, but I couldn’t bring myself to let someone else take Pearl. No matter who it was, I wouldn’t be able to rest easily. She was one of the very few family members I still had.

When she saw I wasn’t saying anything, Viola smacked Stick on the back of the head. “You’re a grown man. What’s so hard about facing it? He explains what needs explaining, apologizes where he has to, and that’s that. He’s Laila’s mate. Of course he’ll understand her and support what she’s doing.”

Rubbing the back of his head, Stick muttered unhappily, “Oh yeah? If my future mate ran out on our wedding, I don’t think I’d be able to show my face again.”

“Shut up already!”

Viola smacked him again. The two of them bickered back and forth, kicking up flurries of snow around themselves as they argued.

But my own heart only grew more unsettled. Now that I’d had time to calm down on the road, I’d realized something. I was starting to care about what Samuel thought of me.

“Don’t worry.” At some point, Viola moved closer and patted my shoulder. “Prince Vance isn’t that kind of petty man. He’ll understand you had no choice.”

I forced a small smile. “Mm.”

But the weight in my chest didn’t lift at all.

Viola studied me, then said, “Laila, Pearl’s going to be fine. Didn’t Dr. Sagewood say so? As long as we reach Moongleam Lake within three days, she’ll live. At the speed we’re going now, we’ll make it in two and a half.”

Stick nodded hard. “Right, right. Don’t worry. We’ll definitely make it in time.”

Then after a pause, he added, “It’s just a shame your teacher and Manu are going to make the trip for nothing.”

stopped short. “What do you mean?”

Stick,blinked, then clapped a hand over his mouth.

I turned to Viola. She sighed. “Forget it. We were planning to surprise you. But at this point… you won’t even be there for the mating ceremony.”

Then she told me. My teacher, Aerith, had probably already arrived at Silvermoon Pack by now.

He hadn’t skipped my mating ceremony because he was too lazy to come. Quite the opposite. He’d wanted to surprise me. That was why he’d deliberately had Shane leave ahead of time, so that on the day of the mating ceremony, today, he could appear at Silvermoon Pack with Shane, Tracy, and everyone else.

They would’ve stood there watching me walk toward my Alpha, watching me go through what should have been a sacred ceremony.

The longer I listened, the more my eyes stung. It felt as if something gripped my heart hard, then let go, and a rush of warmth surged up inside me until it hurt.

So that was it. They still loved me. They hadn’t blamed me for pushing them away back then. All that coldness, all that distance, all those things I’d told myself were not true, they hadn’t taken any of it to heart. They were only waiting. Waiting for me to turn back.

The wind and snow grew even fiercer. Pellets of snow struck my face and stung.

But I took a deep breath and suddenly felt stronger. As if something were spilling out from my chest and flowing through my limbs, steadying even my steps. No matter what was waiting ahead, I had the strength to face it now.

In the back of my mind, Nita muttered softly, “Honestly, postponing the ceremony isn’t such a bad thing. His curse still hasn’t been broken yet… at least this is safer.”

I didn’t answer. I only held Pearl a little tighter and kept moving forward into the storm.
