In Frostwind Pack, the altar had been adorned with pure white roses, their petals dusted with fine snow, making the whole scene look even colder and more beautiful.
Guests stood in small groups with cups of honey wine in hand, chatting with smiles full of anticipation. A mating ceremony witnessed by the Moon Goddess was always one of the grandest days in any pack. And today, the pair set to become mates were Laila of Silvermoon Pack and the kingdom’s moonlight, Prince Vance.
The opening bells rang. Everyone turned toward the sound. Only Samuel walked onto the altar.
The cl nking of glasses stopped at once. Whispers spread through the crowd like a rising tide.
“Where’s Laila?”
“Did she run away from the wedding?”
“Ironclaw Pack is holding a mating ceremony today too. Don’t tell me she ran off to steal Holt back.”
“I said from the start she still couldn’t let go of that former Alpha. But this is too much…”
“Moon Goddess above, Prince Vance has really been humiliated this time.”
In the crowd, Morgana’s eyes widened, and her wineglass nearly slipped from her hand. King Vaughn stood in the front row, frowning deeply and saying nothing.
Samuel stood at the center of the altar. He was dressed in a silver–gray formal suit, the one he had carefully chosen because it matched Laila’s wedding attire best. But the arm that should have been holding Laila’s was empty.
He lifted his head and let his gaze sweep across the entire gathering. The murmuring gradually died away.
“I know you’re all wondering,” he said, his voice calm and steady, cutting through the wind and snow, “why I’m standing at this altar alone.”
The whole place fell silent.
“Laila isn’t standing here today because she went to save someone who matters deeply to her. I was the one who let her go.”
Someone in the crowd let out a scornful snort. Samuel ignored it.
“Some say she fled at the last moment. Some say her heart belongs to someone else.” He paused, his gaze sharp as a blade as it swept across the whispering faces. “I’m standing here today to tell you with my own mouth….
“The Luna I chose is named Laila. She is loyal, loving, and would never abandon anyone she cares about. That is exactly why I love her. And yes, she loves me too.”
The crowd went still for one heartbeat. Then the noise erupted like a disturbed hive.
Samuel paid it no mind. He simply released his Alpha pressure and said, enunciating every word, “Today, Frostwind Pack has failed in courtesy by making all of you come here for nothing. On the day the ceremony is officially held, every household will find an extra reindeer at its table, and every cup will be filled with a ten–year reserve. That is my apology to you all.”

He paused. Then the pressure in the air deepened, like the sky bearing down just before a blizzard struck.
“But…”

He raised his eyes and slowly looked across the crowd. “If anyone dares use what happened today to slander Laila by even half a word, I don’t care who you are or which pack you belong to. I will find you, no matter the cost. And then I will tear out your throat with my own hands.”
His voice wasn’t loud, but it felt like wolf fangs pressed against every throat present. The entire place fell deathly silent.
Then a commotion broke out at the back of the crowd. Shane was standing there with Aerith and the teachers and students of Moonlight Academy at his side. No one knew when they’d arrived, or how much of it they’d heard. The corners of Aerith’s lips lifted slightly, and for once, a look of satisfaction appeared on his face.
Morgana’s expression changed completely. She stared at the tall figure on the altar, her fingers tightening around her skirt. Samuel… his feelings for Laila ran that deep? So deep that even after she fled the wedding, he still intended to wait for her?
