Chapter 348 Maris Unmasked

Third–person POV:

Ever since coming back from the battlefield, Holt had barely sought Maris out unless he had something important

to say.

Maris had heard the news too–Victoria had actually used her late mate’s death benefit to buy Elara a necklace.

What a fool.

She would never do anything like that.

Holt looked at Maris and said, “I really wish you’d tell me that you never did those things in Deervale City.”

Maris let out a cold laugh, her voice dripping with mockery. “So you’re disgusted by me because of Deervale City? No, it’s because you think I got captured by those soldiers, gang–raped, and now, you think I’m dirty. Well, I can tell you right now, I’m completely untouched.”

Holt didn’t believe a word of it. She had killed Solantia’s crown prince, so how could they possibly have let her off that easily?

Every man knew exactly what it took to destroy a woman.

His face turned cold. “Fine, let’s say what you’re telling me is true. But what really turns my stomach is what you did to those civilians. If it hadn’t been for that, maybe the two of us wouldn’t be cursed right now. Damn it, Maris, I got dragged down with you. Every full moon, I lose my wolf spirit, and my whole body is racked with pain.”

“What does that have to do with me?”

Maris hid the fact that she had used the mating mark to transfer half her pain over to him, and back then, it had been Holt himself who had agreed to re–mark her in exchange for her promise not to make a scene at his mating ceremony with Victoria.

That had been a fair trade between them, and she had done nothing wrong.

Maris changed the subject. “As for the killing of civilians, do you actually think I was in the wrong?”

“You don’t think you were wrong?” Holt drew in a sharp breath. “Even now, after everything, you still don’t think you did anything wrong?”

Maris wasn’t wearing her veil, and the lamplight caught her face, casting one half in light and the other in shadow. while a blazing fire burned in her eyes. “Of course, I wasn’t wrong. Holt, if I hadn’t done what I did, how could we have racked up that kind of merit at Lovanfall Battlefield? How could I have become the kingdom’s first female general? Even if Laila became a general after me, I’d still be the first. She’ll always rank behind me!”

Holt frowned, and Maris pressed on.

Holt shook his head. “General Conlay would never have slaughtered civilians. Every battlefield victory of his was earned fair and square.”

Maris scoffed. “Give me a break, Holt. That kind of talk only works on you. Nobody else is buying it.

“If they could do it, then so could I.

“I just had the bad luck of accidentally killing their crown prince, and that’s what blew the whole thing wide open.” Looking at the unrepentant Maris, Holt felt as though he had never truly known her at all.

He stared at her, unable to find words, but Maris still had plenty more to say to him.

She stepped right up in front of Holt. “Holt, if I were you–if I had Alpha–level power–my accomplishments by now would be a lot greater than yours.

“You’re not cut out for the battlefield. You’re soft–hearted, you can’t follow through on anything, and you’re always stubbornly trying to obey rules that nobody else even bothers with!

“Ironclaw Pack hasn’t been able to grow, and more than half of the blame for that lands squarely on you.”

The mockery and contempt in her voice was the same as taking Holt’s pride, throwing it on the floor, and grinding it under her heel.

Holt stood there dumbstruck, knowing perfectly well that what she said was wrong, yet having no idea where to even begin pushing back.

“Nothing left to say, huh?” Maris said with a smile, piling on every accusation she could. “Holt, think about it carefully. Think about everything I sacrificed for you. When I came back from earning my merit, every single person praised me as Rydar Kingdom’s first female general. Back then, I could’ve easily found an uprnated he–wolf and become his only Luna. But I didn’t. Because I loved you. I was willing to be your secondary Luna. And what about you?

“The moment something happened to me, your heart turned. You agreed to His Majesty’s terms and took Victoria as your mate, and on top of all that, you still couldn’t let go of Laila. But have you ever once thought about how Laila treated you? She doesn’t have an ounce of feeling for you in her heart!”

Holt shook his head. “No, I’m the one who wronged Laila first. I’m the one who broke her heart. I owe her.” He scrambled for proof that Laila had loved him. “While I was away at war, she took such good care of the household. She gave her money and her time, and she even brought in Dr. Sagewood to treat my mother…”

“Enough, Holt, stop defending her!”

Maris cut him off. “Wasn’t that exactly what she was supposed to do?”
