Chapter 349 Maris Runs, Holt Stays
Third–person POV:
Maris spoke through gritted teeth.
“Everyone reaches a point where they have to compromise. I made a compromise for you. I was willing to be your secondary Luna. But Laila wasn’t. She went straight to His Majesty and asked to dissolve the mate bond with you. She made every single person believe you were the one who betrayed her. She turned General Conlay’s old subordinates against you. She made sure you had no one in the military to back you up! You should hate her, Holt. So why on earth do you feel like you owe her anything?”
Holt couldn’t find the words to answer.
Because everything Maris was saying was also the truth.
On more than a few sleepless nights, he had turned these same questions over in his head.
Seeing that he wasn’t going to speak, Marís pressed on. “Stop feeling guilty about Laila. The person you truly wronged is me.
“You already had Laila, and yet you still let your heart wander to me. You wanted to be with me.
“Then everything terrible happened to me, and not only did you fail to comfort me, but in the end, you abandoned me and let Victoria be your primary Luna.
“I was the one who came first, and yet I’m still only the secondary Luna. Have I ever once made a scene about any of this with you? No. My only request was for you to re–mark me, and that was it.
“Holt, I’m only a Beta. On full moon nights, I lose contact with my wolf spirit too, and my whole body hurts just as badly. But I’ve never once bothered you with it, because I know how tired and how worn down you already are Holt, I love you. I’ll admit it–hiding the village massacre from you was my fault. But I’m the one who loves you the most, Holt…”
Tears welled up and spilled over, her amber eyes shimmering with them.
For a single instant, Holt’s heart softened.
It was true–he had been the one who admired her in the first place, who approached her, who took her to bed, who brought her back to Ironclaw Pack and made her his Luna.
He really had loved this woman once.
And yet when she was at her lowest, he hadn’t been by her side. He had even looked down on her.
Guilt came rushing over him like a wave. Holt stepped forward and pulled Maris into his arms. “I’m sorry. I was wrong. I…”

He never got to finish his sentence, because someone burst into the room.
A pair of razor–sharp Wolf claws glinted with a chilling gleam in the moonlight.
Holt instantly swept Maris up and leapt aside to dodge.

Maris’s gaze turned ice–cold in a heartbeat as she looked at the intruder. His face was covered, his arms already shifted into wolf form, and there was no way to tell where he came from–but one thing was obvious. He was an Alpha wolf.
Holt immediately put himself between Maris and the attacker.
“Who are you?” he demanded.
The intruder didn’t answer.
Four more figures stepped out from behind him. Two were Alpha–level, and two were Beta–level.

Holt’s expression turned grim.
So did Maris’s, and she had a strong suspicion this group had come for her.
