Laila was dressed in a moon–white, form–fitting combat outfit. The cuffs were drawn tight at the wrists, and the hem was cut open at the sides for ease of movement. On her feet, she wore a pair of knee–high soft leather boots, the shafts embroidered with a subtle dark pattern. The whole look was sharp and capable, without losing the slender, willowy lines of a woman.
Even now, the killing intent hadn’t faded from her eyes, and the spray of her enemies‘ blood was still spattered in flecks across her clothes.
She gave the order in a cold voice. “Tie them up and hand them over to the Justice Department.”
“Yes, Luna…”
The servant from the den answered immediately, then caught herself a beat too late and rushed to correct the slip. “I’m sorry, Ms. Conlay.”
Laila didn’t react at all.
Off to the side, however, Victoria had gone a little pale. The moment Laila had saved Holt, she had been stunned to her core. So it turned out that a she–wolf could be that fearsome after all.
But the second she heard the servant call Laila “Luna,” jealousy and rage twisted her heart all over again.
She was the Luna of Ironclaw Pack.
Her face hardened. She pushed herself up off the ground, hurried over to Holt’s side, and staked her claim out loud. “Holt, how are you? Are you alright?”
Holt’s eyes were raw and red. He didn’t seem to hear a single word Victoria was saying. He was simply staring at Laila, unable to look away.
His whole body was covered in wounds, but most of thern were only surface cuts. Even so, somehow, the pain went bone–deep.
Just moments ago, when Maris had grabbed him and used him as a human shield, he had been certain he was going to die.
And in that very moment, with death closing in all around him, Laila had come.
In that single instant, his heart was a tangled mess of emotion and pain. Surviving a brush with death had left his feelings in chaos. Dragging his bleeding leg behind him, he stepped forward, staring at Laila. “You came to save me. Why would you come? You still care about me. I’m still in your heart, aren’t I?”
Laila’s brow knit together. “Did they hit you in the head too many times?”

“No, they didn’t!” Holt stared at her, lost in his own thoughts, his eyes bloodshot. “I’m in your heart. I’m still in your heart. You’re just angry because I betrayed you and ended up with Maris.”
Laila rolled her eyes and turned to Holt’s Beta. “Once you have these men tied up, take them straight to the Justice Department. I’m leaving now!”
“Yes, Ms. Conlay!”
The Beta answered loud enough to make a point. He was also trying to remind Alpha Holt that Laila wasn’t their
Luna anymore.
That was why he added one more question on top. “Will Prince Vance be interrogating them personally?”
He didn’t know anything about Samuel’s secret mission, and he assumed Samuel was still in Frostwind Pack.
At the mention of his name, Laila thought of Samuel as well. A faint smile touched her lips. “He has other matters to take care of.”
When she spoke of Samuel, her expression softened considerably.
Holt’s face went chalk white in an instant.
He recognized that look. Before she had ever found out that he was with Maris, this was exactly how she used to look at him.
But now, whenever she looked at him, Laila’s face held nothing but coldness and disgust…
