Chapter 356 Cold as a Knife

Third-person POV:

King Vaughn had always been wary of Samuel’s strength, and now that Laila had become Samuel’s fiancée, she naturally counted as another piece in his support base.

Today, she had rushed straight to Ironclaw Pack to catch those assassins, and she had gotten there even before the patrolling guards arrived.

King Vaughn was bound to figure it out. She had known about it ahead of time.

She would need to come up with an explanation for why she had known beforehand but hadn’t tipped off the official guards.

Everything else was easy enough to handle. The real problem was whether King Vaughn took it as a sign of disrespect to the crown.

Inside her mindscape, Nita gave her tail a flick. “Would he really think that? That seems like a stretch.”

Laila let out a sigh. “I hope so. But I’ll never underestimate a king’s paranoia.”

When Holt got back to the den, his mood was actually pretty decent. Laila had agreed to help him, and on top of that, she had asked him to help her out behind the scenes, which meant the two of them were bound to be crossing paths more often from here on.

Then the moment he stepped through the door, his temper went through the roof.

The whole place was a complete mess. Blood still hadn’t been wiped up, splintered wood was scattered all over the floor, and there wasn’t a single person around to clean any of it up. Money was tight, and there simply weren’t enough servants to go around. All of it was that lunatic Maris’s fault.

His face dark as a thundercloud, he strode straight toward Maris’s courtyard.

A few servants behind him muttered under their breath.

“Alpha must be on his way to settle the score with Maris, right? She’s the one who brought all this down on us in the first place.”

“More than that. I was right there. You guys didn’t see it. She literally yanked Alpha in front of her to take a blade for her! By the Moon Goddess, she actually went and did it.”

“Has she lost her mind? How does someone like that ever get made a saintess?”

Holt didn’t have the patience to listen to any more. He had already kicked his way into Maris’s courtyard.

Maris had been waiting for Holt for a while now.

She knew perfectly well that, after this one night, Holt was completely done with her. Whatever scraps of affection had ever existed between them, there wasn’t a crumb of it left.

So when Holt kicked the courtyard gate open and stormed in, she didn’t so much as lift an eyelid.

Holt’s pupils narrowed to slits, and he roared at her. You shoved me in front of a damn blade? The second things went south, your first thought was to get me killed? Is this what you meant when you talked about ‘thinking of our future’?”

Maris swept him with an icy glance. “I only pushed you because those assassins weren’t going to kill you. You honestly think I wanted you to die in my place? Those killers tonight came for me, but they went easy on you. Has it never even crossed your mind to ask why?”

Holt grabbed her by the jaw, his claws almost sinking into her skin. “Cut the act. I’ve heard your lies so many times my ears have gone numb. Even if those killers hadn’t wanted to take me out, there was no way for me to dodge. When you shoved me forward, you had my arms locked down so tight I couldn’t even block. Maris, you really are a piece of work.”

“I’m a piece of work? Did you lose your mind somewhere along the way?” Maris snapped too, letting out a low growl. “Have you ever stopped to think about why those killers only came after me and weren’t going to kill you? Why didn’t Laila show up a minute earlier or a minute later but right when you were about to die? She had to have been there the whole time, crouched in the shadows, waiting for that exact moment!”

“And so what?” Holt stood right in front of her, looking down at her with nothing but disgust in his eyes.

Maris roared, “That’s exactly why I said you have no brain! Those killers were sent by Laila! She wanted me dead, which is why she had them go easy on you!”

“That’s a damn lie!”

Holt was so furious that his claws came up on instinct. Wolf claws flashed into existence in midair, gleaming with a cold light, but he stopped them right there.

He clenched his fist tight and pulled it back, his voice dropping to something low and ice-cold. “If it really was Laila, then why didn’t she just kill all those assassins herself? Why would she hand them over to the Justice Department to be interrogated? You’re the one who killed them. You were the one afraid they were Solantians. You were the one afraid the truth about Deervale City would get dragged back out into the open!”

He took one step closer, his wolf eyes locked on her without blinking. “Maris, drop the act. You’ve got plenty to be guilty about. What you did in Deervale City could get you executed a hundred times over. Slaughtering innocent people. Even an animal wouldn’t sink that low.”

Watching the furious Holt in front of her, Maris suddenly broke into a smile.

She shook her head as she spoke. “Idiot. You really are an idiot, Holt. You’ve walked right into her trap and gotten yourself stuck in it. Yes, I was guilty. I was afraid those men were Solantians. But the second I saw their faces, ! knew. This was Laila’s setup. She’s hated every last one of you the whole time. She isn’t out for revenge in the
