Two days later, the news of the Ironclaw Pack Alpha being attacked had spread everywhere, and Morgana caught wind of it too.

She also heard that it was Laila who had saved Holt, which left her thoroughly stunned.

As it happened, she had just finished packing up her things, so she moved straight over to Silvermoon Pack.

Laila didn’t turn her away when she came to stay, either. Raymond was actually quite fond of Princess Morgana.

Once she had moved in, Morgana asked, “Laila, why did you go and save Holt? Wouldn’t it have been so much better to just let him die?”

Laila replied, “He’s a general of the Rydar Kingdom, after all. Losing him would be a loss for the whole kingdom.”

Morgana scoffed. “He’s not much of a general. From what I hear, he’s pretty useless on the battlefield.” She leaned in close to Laila. “You don’t still have feelings for him, do you? Because if you do, Samuel is going to be jealous.”

Laila couldn’t help laughing as she reached out and flicked her on the forehead. “Alright, you little brat, why do you care about any of this?”

Morgana cupped her forehead and grumbled in protest, “I’m 16 years old! I’m not a little brat!”

Her eyes shifted to the side as she leaned in again, her tone turning a little more serious. “Seriously though, Laila. If you really can’t get over him, then on Samuel’s side… what are you planning to do about that?”

Before Laila could answer, Faulkner walked in, with Walter following close behind.

He had come to deliver a royal command.

Vaughn was asking Laila to come to the Royal Court.

What was bound to come had finally arrived.

Laila drew in a deep breath and got to her feet.

Morgana tried to follow, but Walter stopped her. “Your Highness, His Majesty has summoned General Conlay alone.”

Morgana had no choice but to back down.

Laila gave her a small pat on the head. “Don’t worry. I’ll be back soon.”

Morgana pouted. “Who said anything about being worried? I just miss Vaughn, and I wanted to go see him, that’s all.”

taila didn’t call her bluff. She just smiled and nodded. “Alright, I understand. I’ll pass the message along for you!”

Only then did Morgana smile. “Okay. Hurry back.”

    Laila answered, “I will.”

Watching all of this unfold, Walter’s face gave nothing away, but inside, he was quietly floored.

Princess Morgana had always been known for a difficult temper. At the Royal Court, she only ever listened to King Vaughn and Prince Vance.

And yet here she was, on such warm terms with Laila?

Walter couldn’t help taking a long, careful look at Laila. Was this woman really that charming? Did she have men and women alike falling for her?

When Laila arrived at the Royal Court and laid eyes on Vaughn, he was drinking coffee, with a thick stack of reports piled in front of him.

“Your Majesty!” Laila greeted him with a bow.

“You’re here.” Vaughn looked at her with a smile. “Have a seat.”

    “Your Majesty, I wouldn’t dare.”

“Sit. There’s no one else here.” Vaughn waved a hand toward the chair, and Laila stopped resisting and sat down.

Vaughn made small talk for a moment before getting to the point. “I heard Holt was attacked a few days back, and you rushed over to save him. You weren’t hurt, were you?”

Laila knew this was exactly why she had been summoned, and she answered respectfully, “Your Majesty, I wasn’t hurt. Thank you for your concern.”

Vaughn made a small sound of acknowledgment. “That’s good to hear.”

His gaze settled on Laila’s face. “I heard you subdued every one of those assassins in a matter of minutes?”

Laila paused for a beat. “I didn’t really count… something like that.”

The truth was, she didn’t want to admit how quickly she had taken them down. She was worried Vaughn might read too much into it.

But there had been too many witnesses for her to keep it under wraps, and the only option was to tell the truth.

A flicker of admiration rose in Vaughn’s eyes. “Holt and Maris together couldn’t even hold them off, and they lost several of their own people in the process. Laila, your skill is far beyond theirs.”
