She lifted her head and looked toward Vaughn. He was still focused on the documents in his hands. His sharply defined profile looked as cold and imposing as ever, his brows furrowing from time to time. Even sitting there in silence, the natural pressure of a king still radiated from him. Candlelight flickered across his eyes, making them seem even darker.

Not wanting to interrupt him, Laila quietly waited beside him while her thoughts wandered.

She had originally assumed this summons would come with endless questioning. Yet Vaughn had never once asked how she knew something had happened on Holt’s side.

Did he simply not care? Or was he planning something else entirely?

She couldn’t figure it out.

Right as she was lost in thought, Vaughn suddenly spoke.

“Laila?”

She snapped back to reality and hurriedly met his gaze. “Your Majesty, I’m sorry. I got distracted.”

Vaughn smiled faintly, softening some of the sharpness in his features. “It’s alright. I was too focused on myself and didn’t notice you’d already finished.”

He casually picked up one of the reports she had reviewed and flipped through it. His eyes skimmed over her notes before he nodded. “Your suggestions are excellent.”

“Thank you for the praise, Your Majesty.”

Vaughn set the report down and stood up. “That’s enough for today. Laila, if I need help in the future, I’ll ask you to come again. Is that alright?”

Laila froze for a second before answering, “O-Of course.”

Vaughn’s lips lifted slightly. “Good. Then goodbye, Laila.”

She stood as well. “Goodbye, Your Majesty. May the Moon Goddess bless you.”

She turned and walked out, her steps steady enough, but she could clearly feel it. That gaze remained fixed on her back the entire time, never once leaving her.

Only after stepping out of the Royal Court did she finally let out a long breath.

Nita snorted in dissatisfaction. “So what?”

Laila couldn’t be bothered arguing with her. Burdened with thoughts, she made her way back to Silvermoon Pack.

Since negotiations were currently underway with the Rydar Kingdom, they intended to exchange the hostage they held for Simonne Town. So, the place imprisoning the hostage was guarded with extreme security, layers upon layers of soldiers surrounding it.

Samuel and the others had already infiltrated the border city several days ago. At last, they had confirmed where Cottontail was being held-a heavily fortified high-security prison.

They had also roughly figured out the layout within the prison walls.

None of them knew about Blake’s seven-day deadline. Tomorrow would be the final day.

But Samuel knew Victor would meet with Blake for another round of negotiations tomorrow. Samuel understood Blake well enough to know he probably wouldn’t follow orders to stall the talks deliberately.

So, Samuel decided that tomorrow, while Victor was occupied in negotiating, they would launch the rescue.

Victor had managed to drag out the battle at Vagen for so long because he valued his own life too much. When heading into the negotiations, he would definitely bring most of the high-ranking werewolves with him.

That meant prison security would be significantly weaker.

And that would give them the opening to rescue Cottontail.

Samuel finalized the plan.

One person would remain outside as support while the other three broke in to rescue the prisoner.

The one staying outside to cover them was Woodrow.

The operation was scheduled for 8:00 p.m.-right during the changing of the guard.
