“But if we keep sitting here, we can’t do a damn thing,” Finneas said, a wave of anxiety thick in his voice. “Honestly, sending these 3,000 soldiers here is pointless. If they safely cross the grasslands, it means they’re already out of harm’s way. And us? Whether it’s 3,000 men or 1,000, none of us can cross the grasslands and climb the mountain to help them out.”

Callum glanced around before lowering his voice. “He’s doing it all for King Vaughn to see. He wants to look like he’s ‘fully cooperating with the rescue‘ so the King can’t find fault with him. As for whether sending the three thousand of us actually does any good? He couldn’t care less.”

The two men looked at each other and sighed at the same time.

They had served under the best marshal.

A man who truly led his soldiers through life–and–death battles.

Blake? They genuinely looked down on him.

Yet Vaughn had still replaced Samuel with him.

Luckily, there weren’t any wars going on right now.

Guarding Simonne Town and making sure the Ovila forces didn’t launch a counterattack was a job Blake was actually competent enough to handle.

“I’m done waiting, Callum.” A thought suddenly formed in Finneas’s mind. “What if we split into teams of ten and cross the grasslands in batches?”

Callum turned to look at him. After a moment of thought, he nodded. “Fine. We’ll send ten teams–100 men total. They’ll cross the grasslands separately and head toward Ravenspan Mountain. You stay here and hold the position. I’ll go.”

“No. I’m going.”

Finneas grabbed Callum by the shoulder, his expression suddenly turning serious. “Prince Vance didn’t explicitly spell anything out for me–but when he said he was going to rescue the Cottontail team, he looked at me several times. Not once. Several times. I have a feeling… that Cottontail might be my cousin.”

Callum froze, his eyes widening slightly.

“You really think so? Then let me warn you, don’t get your hopes up too high.”

Back when the two kingdoms exchanged prisoners, the two of them had stood at the very front of the crowd, carefully checking every single face. From the first man to the last. From broad daylight until dusk settled in.

Callum never found his brother, Flynn. And Finneas never found his cousin, Terrence.

They laughed along with everyone else. They raised their cups, slapped the shoulders of the men who had made it back alive, and kept saying, “It’s good to have you back.”

But the moment they turned around, the tears wouldn’t stop.

Neither of them slept that entire night.

That was why Callum no longer dared to hope.

He didn’t dare feed that flame any further.

In the end, they decided to go together so they could look out for one another.

Sure enough, crossing the grasslands in small groups didn’t attract the attention of the Rogues wandering near the borderlands.

Meanwhile, Samuel’s group had already reached the other side of Grayridge.

The mountain lived up to its name. From a distance, it looked like the raised spine of a giant beast, with gray–white rock jutting out through the greenery like exposed bones stretching across the horizon. Once they crossed this mountain, the grasslands would be on the other side.

There were only around ten of them entering the grasslands, so they wouldn’t attract the attention of the Rogues.

As for Victor, he wouldn’t dare bring the Ovila army into that lawless land even if he had twice the courage.

But the real question was whether they could survive getting over this mountain.

They had been running nonstop the entire way. Samuel could still endure it, but the others were already reaching their limits. Their legs were shaking. Their muscles felt wrung dry like old cloth, sore and swollen. Every step felt weak and unsteady, like they were walking on

cotton.

To make matters worse, those injured during the rescue were getting worse by the hour.
