He pulled out a medicine bottle from inside his coat, poured several dark brown pills into his hand, and gave them to the injured men, watching each of them swallow the medicine.
The one he worried about most was William.
After all this running, William’s breathing had become weak and unstable, as weak as a candle about to go out in the wind.
Some of the wounds on his body had taken on an unhealthy red color, swollen and burning hot.
Samuel crouched and gently patted his face. The skin beneath his palm burned with fever.
“William.” His voice was low and steady. “We have to keep moving. I’ll carry you. You need to hold on. Your mate is still waiting for you at home. You can’t let her wait for you in vain.”
Mate.
The word pierced William’s fading consciousness like a needle.
His fever–heavy eyelids fluttered, straining to open just a crack. When he managed to speak, the words rasped from his lips, his voice as faint as the crackle of dry leaves. “I’m… a burden…”
The moment he opened his mouth, Samuel shoved a crushed pill onto the back of his tongue. The bitterness and medicinal force spread instantly through his mouth.
“I’ll carry you.” Samuel pulled him up and secured him on his back, carrying him steadily as though he were a child. “Let’s move.”
William’s head hung weakly against Samuel’s shoulder. Hot tears slipped down one after another, slowly soaking through the back of Samuel’s clothes.
“If it comes to that…” His voice was so faint it barely escaped his throat. “Leave me behind…”
His mind was hazy, but he understood one thing clearly. If everyone died here because of him, he wouldn’t be able to die in peace.
Samuel never slowed down.
“No one gets left behind.” The words rumbled from his chest, low and unwavering.

He turned his head and looked at the others stumbling forward while supporting one another.
“This is the last mountain. Once we cross it, we’ll reach the grasslands. Simonne Town is right ahead of us,”
His voice rose with fierce determination, like fire catching dry wood.
“Do you want to go home? Do you want to set foot on your own land again? Do you want to see Vagen again–the Vagen that belongs to us now?”
Everyone’s eyes reddened.
Some bit their lips. Some cried silently. But the same fire burned within all of them.
“More than anything,” someone answered hoarsely.
“Alright then.” Samuel turned back toward the Grayridge towering ahead and took a step forward. “Then let’s move. Home is just ahead.”
Grayridge was steep and treacherous.
It wasn’t like the other mountains they had climbed. Those at least had dense woods and weeds you could hack through to make a path. The stretch from the base to the halfway mark was still manageable; the vegetation was sparse, but they could still find a foothold. But the higher they went, the more brutal the terrain became.
After the halfway point, everything changed.

A nearly vertical cliff stood directly in front of them, as if the Creator had split the mountain apart with a single swing of a giant axe.
The gray–white rock face was bare; not a single blade of grass grew there. Only a few pitiful little bushes stuck out from cracks in the stone, their branches bending wildly in the mountain wind.
There was no path anymore.
The cliff was at least 300 feet high.
To get over Grayridge, they had to climb this smooth wall of rock first.
And on the other side of the cliff, the terrain would still be rough, but at least they could hack out a path with their blades, if they could get past this part.
The problem was that almost none of them could get past the cliff.
