They couldn’t wait any longer.

The enemy was right behind them. Every second they wasted could cost them their lives.

Greer and Samuel exchanged a look. There was no hesitation, no doubtjust the perfect understanding shared between a teacher and her student. They both knew this was their only option. It was crude and risky, but it was the only option left.

They would carry the others up one by one on their backs.

The problem was, besides Woodrow and Luke, there were still eight more people who needed to get up there.

That meant Samuel and Greer would each have to make four or five round trips. In their current exhausted state, it could kill them.

I’m sorry to trouble you, Ms. Livingston,Samuel said, guilt flickering in his eyes.

Greer sighed. The way she looked at him was complicatedhelplessness and pity.

You’re my only student. You’ve suffered through all that, and then you fell for a girl who doesn’t love you back. If I don’t feel bad for you, who will?

Samuel opened his mouth, wanting to say that he actually felt lucky.

At least, Laila had agreed to marry him. Even if the wedding had been postponed, she was still his fiancée.

As for the curse on him, he believed there had to be a solution eventually.

But the moment he saw the pity in Greer’s eyes, he swallowed the words back.

Forget it. Better to get everyone up first. With his teacher’s stubborn personality, if she disagreed with him, she might get mad and refuse to help again.

There was no more time to talk.

Samuel hoisted Flynn onto his back first, while Greer carried Terrence.

The others stayed behind to look after William and wait for them to come back down. Samuel tilted his head slightly and said to Flynn in a low voice, Hold tight. Other than

breathing, don’t move at all.”

Flynn gave a quiet grunt of agreement, wrapping his arms around Samuel’s neck with just the right amount of force.

In the next instant, Samuel launched them both into the air.

Wind roared past his ears as the gray cliff face loomed rapidly before them like a giant wall.

Samuel kicked off the ground, launching himself toward the rock face like a bullet. His hand clamped around the first small tree growing from a crack in the stone. His fingers locked around it, his entire body hanging from one arm.

He didn’t dare put all his weight on the tree; it wouldn’t hold, and they still had to make several more trips.

He braced a knee against the cliff, searching for footing, but the rock was slick as polished stone. His toes couldn’t wedge in at all. He could only grit his teeth and inch himself sideways little by little.

Finally, his right foot found the tiniest little bump in the rock. No wider than a fingernail, but enough.

Using that foothold, he launched himself back into the air, lunging toward the second small

tree.

This time, he had to angle left. His right hand reached desperately for the tree.

Everyone’s hearts leaped into their throats.

From where they stood, it was impossible to judge the distance accurately. It looked like Samuel’s hand was still short of the tree. Like he wasn’t going to make it.

But he caught it.
