No one dared to say a word, afraid that the slightest sound might distract the people climbing the cliff.

Thankfully, dangerous as it was, both of them made it safely to the top.

After dropping Flynn and Terrence off in a secure spot at the summit, they slid back down. Going down was much easier. Once they slid down to a certain height, they grabbed onto a tree to stabilize themselves, slowly turned around, and then lightly jumped back to the ground.

Luke and Woodrow stayed behind for now. They planned to climb up themselves after Samuel and Greer finished carrying everyone else first.

But even after just one trip, Samuel and Greer were already gasping for air.

The two of them sat down to catch their breath for a moment before forcing themselves back

  1. up.

It was time for the next trip.

Greer would have to make four trips in total, while Samuel had five.

William was the last one left.

William was the toughest case. He didn’t have the strength to hold onto Samuel himself, so they had to use ropes to secure him tightly to Samuel’s back. This completely threw off Samuel’s balance, making every single move harder.

So for this final trip, Greer dropped back down with him, even though she didn’t need to.

She stood beside Samuel, completely drenched in sweat. Her wet hair clung to her scalp as water dripped from the ends.

You carry him up,Greer said, her voice a bit raspy but steady. I’ll stay right behind you. If anything happens, I’m here.

Samuel nodded without saying thanks.

Okay.”

This time, he had to climb while bent forward.

With someone on his back who couldn’t adjust their own center of gravity, Samuel had to keep himself steady in an awkward position the entire time.

It was far harder than any of the previous trips.

Woodrow and Luke climbed up alongside him as well.

Three people moved alongside himone ahead, two behind.

At the top of the cliff, everyone lay against the rocks and looked down.

Their eyes stayed locked on Samuel’s bent figure, hearts pounding hard in their chests.

Everyone knew this was the most dangerous trip.

Samuel launched himself outward.

He caught the first small tree. Stable.

He took a slow breath in and out, adjusting for the shift caused by the weight on his back.

Another leap. The second tree. Stable again.

The third tree. Then the fourth.

He caught every one of them cleanly.

But climbing completely bent over like this was draining the last of Samuel’s energy. His arms were shaking, and his waist and back ached violently. His body was warning him of its limits every time he lunged for the next tree.

The fifth tree.

He lunged for it and shot out his right hand. His fingertips scraped across the rough bark. Joy flashed through him. He closed his fist, only to grab empty air.
