He rolled up the letter and slipped it into the small copper tube tied to the carrier pigeon’s leg. Trase pigeons had been brought all the way from the Frostwind Pack. They were meant to carry messages during the rmission. Greer had brought pigeons too, but this time, only Rowan and Sara could truly help.

Rowan could heal him.

And Sara was William’s reason to stay alive.

Right now, there was no better option.

The pigeons could fly hundreds of miles a day. Samuel believed Laila would leave as soon as she got the message. That meant they needed to prepare on their side too.

He turned toward Terrence. He wanted to tell him to stay behind and recover before heading home. But before he could speak, Terrence spoke first.

“I’m coming with you.”

His voice was low. His eyes were bloodshot. But his tone was firm, like a nail hammered deep into wood.

Flynn was injured too, though not badly. Callum had wanted him to rest a few more days before traveling. After all, William was already heading to Aurilles for treatment, so there was no need to rush.

Samuel looked at each of them one by one.

“Alright,” he said quietly. “Then we go together.”

Nobody smiled.

Of course they had been happy to return to Simonne Town alive. The relief had been overwhelming, like drowning men finally touching solid ground again. But after the medic examined William and spoke those words, everyone’s hearts sank.

They wanted to smile, but they could not.

Samuel went to find Blake and requested a medic to travel with them.

Blake agreed almost immediately. There was more than one medic in the army. Sending one along was no trouble.

The letter to Vaughn had already been sent. And now that all the political calculations were over, Blake found himself feeling genuine respect for the eight men. Especially after hearing how critical William’s condition was, real concern showed on his face.
