By the time Laila arrived at 10 p.m. that night, William’s family had already gone to bed.

Everyone felt confused when Laila dragged them out of sleep in the middle of the night. But the person standing at the door was Laila, the fiancée of Prince Vance and daughter of General Sonlay. Her status alone opened every door.

Soon the whole household was awake. Lamps were lit. Coats were thrown on. Servants hurried to pour water as everyone crowded into the living room.

Laila stood in the center of the room and looked around. Sara was not there.

“I have urgent business with Mrs. Arnold,” she said. “Please have her bring some clothes and travel with me to Aurilles immediately.”
