She had always been the one carrying everything. The family, the pack, the battlefield. She was used to holding it together, used to never letting anyone see when she couldn’t.

But Samuel always saw through her.

He knew when she was pushing herself too hard. He knew when she needed someone behind her. She never had to ask. He was just there.

Laila closed her eyes and buried her face against his clothes.

The metal links clattered against the ground. Shawn turned back, crying hysterically. “Mom! Help me! Please save me! I know I was wrong! I don’t want to go to prison! Mom!”

No one answered him.

Not even Evelyn. She turned her gaze away.

He had gone too far. There was no saving him now.

Lillian was still very weak. She already knew the child was gone. She had known the moment Rowan arrived before the birth.

In front of Laila, she held back her tears. She didn’t cry. But after settling into Silvermoon Pack, the moment Laila stepped out, she buried her face and wept.
