Samuel strode out of the study. The night wind hit him head–on, and only then did the anger in his chest ease a little.

He accepted Luke’s mind link.

“You’d better have a good reason,” he said, his voice cold enough to cut.

Luke paused on the other end.

He heard the edge in it, sharp and heavy. He had no idea what he’d interrupted, but he reported anyway.

“Your Highness, the Alpha of Thunder Pack went to Alpha Damian’s residence. He stayed there a long time before leaving.”

“That’s it?”

A chill of killing intent bled through the link.

Luke’s back went cold. He hurried to add, “Silas was attacked. He’s badly injured and unconscious.”

Samuel’s steps slowed.

‘He had dodged a few attempts before, but not this time,” Luke added.

Samuel’s expression darkened.

‘What about the Alpha King of the Solantia Kingdom? What’s his condition? Last I heard, he wouldn’t make it through the summer. t’s already fall.”

‘Reports are all over the place,” Luke said. “Even the people in Solantia don’t know how their Alpha King is doing.”

Samuel let out a quiet breath.

He wanted that man to hold on a while longer.

After a moment, Samuel said, “Send word to Tracy. See if her people can get Snowpetal Pills to Silas. Keep him alive.”

“I already did,” Luke replied. “Before I contacted you, I passed the message and the Snowpetal Pills to Charlotte. She’ll handle delivery.”

Samuel’s brow lifted. “Trying to stay one step ahead of me?”

Luke sounded faintly pleased “Just proving I earn my pay”

Samuel let out a short, cold laugh.

nside, Laila waited, listening. She didn’t hear any footsteps, so she assumed he’d left.

She stared blankly for a while, then lowered her head and went back to the pages she couldn’t seem to read.

By the time midnight came, she finally put everything away, stood, and rubbed the stiffness from her neck.

She opened the door. Samuel was leaning against the wall outside, asleep.

His head tilted slightly, his breathing slow and even. Moonlight fell across his face, softening the sharp edges of it.

Laila stood there, looking down at him, lips pressed together.

She didn’t wake him.

She waved a guard over and said quietly, “Bring a blanket.”
