Why did I let him in? Why did I wash his clothes? What is wrong with you, Cassia? she asked herself, confusion thick in her voice as she stared at the hanger one last time.

She left the laundry room and headed back to her bedroom. Curing on the bed, she tried to force herself to sleep, but it refused to come. Instead, Aiden’s presence burned through her thoughts, twisting her chest with an ache that felt like

torture.

Regret pressed down on her. I should never have let him inside. Never.

He’s going to be uncomfortable. At least give him a duvet and pillow, a voice inside whispered. She groaned aloud, annoyed with herself, but the guilt won.

Dragging herself to her feet, she grabbed a duvet and a pillowcase, clutching them as if they might shield her from what she was really doing. Then she walked downstairs.

When she reached the living room, she froze. Aiden was sitting on the couch, shirtless, his broad shoulders slumped as he stared into nothing. His face was shadowed, haunted, as though the silence itself had swallowed him whole. He didn’t even notice her until she stepped closer.

“Aiden…” Cassia’s voice came soft, almost hesitant.

His head lifted instantly, eyes locking on hers. “Hey…” he muttered, but the way his eyes lit up at the sight of her betrayed something deeper. His gaze dropped to the duvet and pillow in her arms.

“I thought you might need these. To make yourself more comfortable. By tomorrow, your clothes will be fully dry-” she said, her voice quieter than she intended as she stretched them toward him.

“Thank you.” His hand reached out.

The moment their fingers brushed, both of them stilled. A jolt rushed through them, sharp and undeniable, like their bodies remembered what their minds tried to forget. Shivers raced down their spines, and Cassia’s wolf stirred violently. jolting against her control.

Her breath hitched as their eyes locked. For a heartbeat too long she drowned in the glisten of his gaze, in the memory of what those eyes once meant to her. To feel it again…it was a sin, an abomination after everything he had done.

She pulled her hand back quickly, tearing away from the spark, and he gave her a small, almost broken smile.

“You should rest. I’ll sleep here,” she said, but her feet stayed rooted, her wolf resisting the idea of leaving him.

“Yeah, you should go,” he replied softly. But even as he spoke, his eyes clung to her, as though asking her to stay.

She nodded, forcing a smile, yet lingered. Still staring. Still waiting. For him to speak. For him to do something.

“I’m sorry for all the trouble. And… thank you for letting me in,” he said finally.

Her lips twitched into a forced smile, but her chest tightened. Because when she looked into his eyes, she swore she saw something a pull, a silent plea that begged her not to leave.

She was fighting it, but losing.

And then…

Thunder split the night sky with a deafening roar.

Cassia flinched violently. Before she could stop herself, she bolt into his arms, trembling as tear took over.

Aiden froze, his breath caught as her body crashed against his bare chest. The thin fabric of her braless gown did nothing to hide the hardened peaks of her breasts pressing against his warmth. Heat rushed through him; he swallowed hard, biting his lip as his wolf howled inside.

But instinct overpowered everything else. He wrapped his arms round her, pulling her close, holding her as tightly as he used to when storms frightened her. His chest rose and fell against her cheek, steady and grounding, until the thunder’s rumble faded into silence.

Slowly, she opened her eyes. Tilting her head up, she found herself staring into him. Those eyes, soft, raw, and unbearably familiar. Their gazes locked, and time seemed to shatter.

Cassia broke first. She pulled away too quickly, straightening her gown as if that could erase what just happened. “I’m sorry.

I…”

“You’re still scared of thunder,” Aiden teased gently. But his smile was not mocking. It was tender, aching with memory.

Cassia’s heart stumbled. The storm outside was nothing compared to the storm inside her chest.

She remembered too vividly. The nights he would leave everything behind the moment the sky darkened, rushing home because he knew… he knew she hated thunder and was scared of. He would hold her close, her ear pressed to his chest, his heartbeat drowning out the storm until sleep claimed her.

Her throat tightened.

“If you want, I could…” he began softly.

“No.” She cut him off too fast, the word like armor. “I’m not scared anymore. I got over that a long time ago. I’m perfectly fine.”

But they both knew she was lying. Her flinch had betrayed her. And worse, his eyes….burning, protective, still hers betrayed

him.

She turned to leave, but his voice stopped her.

“Amelia.”

She froze. Slowly, she turned back.

His eyes were heavy, raw. His voice cracked. “I know you’re angry with me. You have every right to be. After what I did…. I feel so ashamed of myself.”

“Aiden-”

“Please. Just hear me out,” he pleaded, desperation rough in his one.

Her lips pressed together, silence giving him permission.

“I made a mistake by hurting you. I thought I was protecting you but all I did was push you away. I put your life in danger. I wish I could go back and fix everything, but I know it’s too late. Still, I need you to know…I’m sorry. For all the pain I caused you. For Eva… for believing a stranger’s lies. I wanted someone to blame, and I let it be you.” His voice cracked further, his eyes glassy with regret.

Cassia’s chest tightened, the sincerity in his words slicing her open.

“I’m sorry you lost our unborn baby…”

The words struck like a dagger. Guilt slammed through her ches Her lips trembled Our baby isn’t gone, Aiden. He’s alive. Arthur is alive. And Ethan isn’t yours either. But she couldn’t speak the truth.not yet. She had to let him find out about Ethan’s identity for himself. And as for Arthur, she would makere he never knows.
