Chapter 124
Meanwhile, it was time for the last trial for Sophia Devereux. The hospital was quieter than usual, Aiden and James had gone to the Blood Watch House, including Cassia.
Dante walked inside the hospital, his wig carefully adjusted as a disguise. His eyes flicked to Ethan’s ward. Two guards stood stationed outside the door, their posture sharp and alert. There was no way he could get inside with them there. His jaw tightened as he walked past, pretending not to care.
A nurse came down the hallway, flipping through a clipboard. Dante seized the moment.
“Excuse me, nurse…” His voice was calm, calculated.
The nurse paused, glanced up, and studied him. “Yes? How can help you, Mr…?”
“I heard Ethan Miller is searching for a blood donor. My blood matches his, and I’d like to donate,” Dante said smoothly. though his heart gave a tight squeeze at the word Miller. He can believe he’s addressing his son by the Alpha’s name.
The nurse frowned, suspicion in her eyes. “What’s your name?”
Dante hesitated. He had planned to give a false one, but Ethan was his flesh and blood. For a moment, pride and fear warred inside him. Finally, he exhaled.
“Dante. Dante Colby.”
“Alright, Mr. Dante,” she said briskly. “You’ll need to come with me to the lab. We’ll take a sample and run tests.”
He nodded, following her down the corridor.
Dante sat outside the lab, his leg bouncing restlessly. The nurse had taken his blood half an hour ago, and still, there was no word. Every tick of the clock clawed at his nerves. If Aiden came back and saw him here, he’d kill him on the spot. And Sofia. he had promised Sofia he’d come for her.
He rubbed his temple, impatient, when finally the nurse returned. Her face lit with a small, professional smile.
“Mr. Dante, your blood matches his perfectly. Could you please fill this form so we can proceed?” She handed him paperwork and a pen.
Relief warmed his chest. He signed the form quickly and returned it to her.
“Come with me,” she said.
Inside the lab, Dante sat while the nurse prepared the equipment. As she worked, her eyes lingered on him. Something about his jawline, his dark lashes… he looked so much like Ethan Too much. Was it coincidence? Or something more? She shook the thought away and focused on her task.
An hour later, Dante staggered out of the lab, his head throbbing They had drawn more blood than he’d expected, leaving him slightly dizzy. He steadied himself against the wall, breathing deeply.
That’s when he saw him.
Only when Alaric disappeared down the hall did Dante release the breath he hadn’t realized he’d been holding.
He turned toward Ethan’s ward again. The guards were still at the door, unmoving. His eyes darted, searching for another way. Then he spotted it, a door labeled Dressing Room.
A nurse passed by, but Dante ignored him and slipped inside.
A male nurse was bent over, tying his shoes. He glanced up sharply. “Hey! What are you doing here? This room is for staff only. Didn’t you see the sign outside?”
“Shut up and take off your clothes,” Dante snapped, pulling a gun from under his jacket and aiming it straight at the man’s forehead.
The nurse froze, trembling, his face draining of color. Slowly, he obeyed, peeling off his uniform and handing it over.
“Good,” Dante muttered, snatching the clothes. Then, with a brutal swing of his gun, he struck the nurse across the head. The man crumpled to the floor, unconscious.
Dante dragged his limp body behind the lockers, out of sight. He stripped quickly, pulling on the uniform, slipping a mask over his face. By the time he stepped back into the hallway, he looked just like any other nurse.
Heart pounding, he walked toward Ethan’s ward. But just as he reached for the door, one of the guards stepped in front of him, blocking the way.
Cold shivers snaked down Dante’s spine. His hand slid toward the gun tucked behind his waistband.
