Chapter 130
Meanwhile, Cassia had gone back home with Arthur after picking him up from school. James, however, returned to the hospital to check on Aiden.
He entered the ward where Aiden had been transferred. The Alpha lay on the bed, his eyes fixed on the ceiling as if lost in a place far away. His skin was still pale, but the harsh strain on his face from earlier was lessened.
“Aiden…” James called softly.
Aiden turned his head toward him, his expression sharpening. His gaze flickered immediately to the door, as though expecting someone else.
“How are you feeling?” James asked, pulling up a chair.
Aiden ignored the question. “Where’s Amelia?”
James exhaled. “She went home with Arthur.”
Aiden bolted upright, glaring. “What? You let her go alone? It’s not safe, James! Sofia and Dante are still out there…. they could go after her at any moment.”
“They won’t,” James said firmly. “I’ve got eyes and ears everywhere. If they make a move, we’ll know before they even get close.”
Aiden let out a sharp breath, but his shoulders didn’t ease. Silence stretched between them until James finally spoke again.
“You seem… calm. Too calm, considering Sofia just escaped with Dante.”
Aiden’s lips curved in a bitter half-smile. “Do I? As long as Amelia is safe, that’s all that matters.”
James narrowed his eyes. “And if you’d died?”
Aiden’s voice was low, steady. “Then so be it. Even if I die… she’ll live. That’s enough.”
James inhaled slowly, studying him. He remembered the way Aiden’s eyes had burned when Dante poured wolfsbane over Cassia. If not for the silver bullets slowing him down, Aiden would have ripped Dante apart with his bare hands.
But it wasn’t just Aiden who had unsettled him. James’s mind flickered back to Cassia fighting Dante. Her eyes had glowed blood-red, her strength terrifying and foreign. She moved like a Alpha born, a power that had never existed in her before. Cassia had never been this strong…even when she still had her wolf. Something about her had changed, and James couldn’t explain it.
A sudden movement drew his attention. Aiden swung his legs off the bed and pushed himself upright, a groan escaping his lips as pain shot through him.
“Where are you going?” James demanded.
“To Amelia’s,” Aiden gritted out, taking a step forward despite the strain. “I can’t leave her alone. It’s not sate. I need to protect her.”
“You’re still wounded!” James snapped, rising to his feet. “Your wolf isn’t fully healed you nearly died hours ago. You need to rest and let yourself recover.”
Aiden paused only to lift his head, lus eyes burning with stubbo fire “I’m fine, James. I have to go now.”
And just like that, he strode toward the door, ignoring the agony facing every step. His body screamed in protest, but his heart… his heart roared louder. He would bleed, he would crawle would burn through every ounce of strength because
James exhaled sharply, exhaustion pressing into his bones. He needed to check on Ethan.
When he entered Ethan’s ward, a nurse was just leaving. James stopped her. “How is he?”
“He’s stable,” she said, glancing back at the boy on the bed. Ethans complexion was brighter, the pallor fading. “Someone donated blood for him earlier. That helped a lot.”
James frowned. “Who?”
“I think…” The nurse hesitated. “Dante. Dante Colby.”
Cold shivers raced down James’s spine. Dante had been here? That meant he knew Ethan was his son. If he had already taken Sofia, there was no doubt…he would come for Ethan next.
James forced a smile and nodded at the nurse as she left. Alone, e pulled out his phone, fingers hovering over Aiden’s number. He paused. Aiden was already wounded, already heading recklessly toward Amelia.
No…this was James’s burden to carry now. He clenched his jaw, lowering the phone.
Dante wasn’t taking Ethan. Not now. Not ever.
He wasn’t going to let it happen!
