The moment Cassia reached her room, she shut the door and leaned back against it, her chest rising and falling in frantic rhythm. Her hand pressed against her heart as if to cage it inside She could still see the pain in Aiden’s eyes when she’d told him she felt nothing for him and the memory alone sliced through her like a blade. Something inside her cracked, something she wasn’t ready to admit.
Why do I even care? Why does his hurt feel like mine?
She already knew the answer. Her wolf. That maddening, treacherous pull. Her wolf wanted him..craved him like air, like fire, like blood itself. He had awakened her, ignited the bond, and now every time he was near she couldn’t shut it out. His presence clung to her skin, seeped into her bones, making it impossible to stop thinking about him no matter how much she tried to bury it.
She bit her lower lip hard, but it only made the memories flood pack, the kiss in her office. The fire. The way his tongue slid into her mouth, not just kissing her but binding her. She had fel it, like a thread of his wolf latching into her soul, tying them together. A bond. A dangerous, unbreakable bond.
Her nipples pebbled beneath her fabric, her core heating just from the memory, and she cursed under her breath. The kiss in the theatre haunted her too-when she thought he had died. In that moment, something of her had poured into him, strengthening the bond even more. Now, whenever she was close her heartbeat spiked, her wolf clawed at her insides, and fire licked through her veins screaming for him.
She loved it. She hated it. Both at once.
Because this was the same man who had broken her. Who had chosen Sofia. Who hadn’t been there when their daughter died. Who had accused her of murder. No confession from Sofia could erase that. He had believed her lies. He had rejected her. And she would never forgive him for it. Even if she did, she would never let him back into her heart.
And she would never tell him about Arthur.
A wolf will always be a wolf, she thought bitterly, even if it wears sheep’s clothing.
She pushed herself away from the door and crossed to the bed, dropping onto it with a heavy sigh. But closing her eyes brought no peace, not with him downstairs, injured and alone.
Her wolf’s voice finally cut through. He left the hospital still bleeding and came here for you. For us. Are you really going to leave him suffering down there?
“I didn’t ask him to come,” Cassia muttered through clenched teeth, rolling her eyes.
You can hate him all you want, but he is still our mate. You can’t bury that bond forever. Eventually, you will forgive him…
“Forgiving doesn’t mean giving another chance,” she hissed, but her wolf went silent, letting the truth fester inside her.
Minutes later, she found herself standing, duvet and pillow in hand, her own resolve crumbling. She told herself it was because he was injured, because leaving him on the couch like that would make her no better than him. But as she descended the stairs, her heart thudded in uneasy rhythm.
Halfway down, she froze. The metallic tang of blood reached her nose, sharp and suffocating Aiden’s blood
Fear jolted her chest. She hurried down the last steps, and the sight waiting for her nearly broke her.
Aiden sat slumped on the couch, his clothes drenched in blood, is skin ashen, his lips pale. His body was still, liteless- looking, his chest rising only faintly.
The duvet slipped from her hands, forgotten on the floor. “Aide” her voice cracked, but he didn’t respond. Panic clawed her throat, tears pricking her eyes. She rushed forward, leaning over him, pressing her ear to his chest. Relief shuddered through her when she caught the faint beat of his heart.

She lifted her head, her gaze softening against her will as she leaned closer, her breath trembling over his lips, desperate to feel his. Then-his eyes fluttered open, dark and burning, locking onto hers.
A violent shiver shot through her, freezing her in place. Their gases tangled, and slowly, her eyes betrayed her, sliding down to his mouth. The bond pulled at her, her wolf howling inside her chest, demanding she close the distance. Her eyes drifted shut, her lips parting as if waiting, longing, for him to claim her.
He bit down on his own lip, fighting the same urge, his chest rising with the weight of restraint. His wolf roared within. begging him to grab her, to kiss her, to make her his again.
“What were you doing?” His voice came low, raw, breaking the tension. “Were you… were you trying to make me kiss you?”
Her eyes snapped open, and she laughed nervously, her voice shaky. “What? No! Don’t flatter yourself. You looked lifeless. I just wanted to check if you were breathing.”
He tried to sit up but pain ripped a groan from him.
Cassia’s instincts overruled her anger. She rushed forward, steading him with her hands and the instant her skin brushed his, fire erupted through her body, sparking along every nerve. Her breath hitched, her eyes betraying her again as they caught his.
She tore her gaze away, swallowing hard. “You’re losing too much blood. We need to clean this now.”
He let her help him to the dining table, collapsing into a chair while she ran to the kitchen and grabbed the first aid box. Every movement she made was laced with urgency, with fear she refused to name.
Setting the box on the table, she fixed him with a stern glare. “Take off your shirt. I need to see the wound.”
His lips curved in the faintest smirk, though his voice was ragged “I can’t.”
“What do you mean you can’t?”
“I mean I can’t lift my arms. The pain is too much.” His eyes flickered to hers, weak but piercing. “Please… help me.” His tone was soft, pleading, almost breaking her.
Her throat tightened. She stepped closer, fingers trembling as they reached the hem of his shirt. The fabric clung to his body, damp with blood and sweat, sticking to every line of his chest. She tugged gently, her knuckles grazing his skin. His breath hitched sharply, a sound that made her own knees weaker.
“Amelia…” he rasped, her name spilling from his lips like a prayer, rough and dangerous all at once.
“Hold still,” she whispered, but even her voice quivered, betraying the want burning inside her.
She peeled the shirt upward inch by torturous inch, his muscles flexing beneath her touch. Their faces were too close now. her breath mingling with his. His scent enveloped her-iron, wolfsbane, blood… and still that intoxicating masculine pull that belonged only to him.
When the shirt finally came free, her palm slid across his bare chest to steady him. Heat flooded her veins like wildfire at the
contact.
Their eyes clashed, raw and molten. His lips parted, her breath ught. The air between them grew heavy, searing, alive with the threat of something neither of them could control.
Her heart slammed in her chest. One step closer, one heartbeatonger, and she knew she would fall into him completely.
And then-he leaned forward.
