“Soon! You need to rest now, Ethan. We’ll get you food and your medicine, so when your mommy comes back, she’ll be happy to see you,” Cassia said with a warm smile, brushing a har over his hair.
Ethan nodded sleepily, a small smile tugging at his lips before he turned to Aiden, who gave him a reassuring grin.
“I have to go now, Ethan,” Cassia added softly. “I’ll be back soon, okay?”
The boy nodded again, sinking back into the pillows. Cassia turned to leave, her shoes clicking lightly on the tiled floor. Aiden’s gaze followed her every step until she reached the door. The moment she stepped out, he rose and followed her into the hallway.
“Amelia,” he called, his deep voice echoing softly behind her.
She stopped but didn’t turn immediately. “What is it, Aiden?”
“Why did you tell him Sofia went to get something?” His tone was low, threaded with restrained frustration.
Cassia turned around slowly, her expression calm but her eyes firm. “Would you rather I tell him she’s dead?” she shot back. “He just woke up from a coma, Aiden. The last thing that little boy needs is bad news. Let him heal, let him breathe. Then. when he’s stronger, you can tell him the truth.”
Aiden exhaled heavily, his shoulders dropping. The fire in his eyes dimmed, replaced by something softer. “Thank you,” he murmured, his voice quieter now.
Cassia blinked, slightly taken aback.
“I mean it, Amelia,” he continued, stepping closer. “Thank you… for everything. For treating Ethan, for not holding Sofia’s sins against him. After everything she did to you, you still chose to save her son. That means more than you know.”
He paused, his gaze intense. “I owe you. If there’s anything you want….anything at all, I’ll give it to you.”
Cassia crossed her arms, arching a brow. “Anything?”
He nodded, lips curling into a faint smirk. “Yeah. Anything… except asking me to stay away from you. Because I won’t give you that.”
She rolled her eyes, trying to hide the heat rising in her cheeks. want to see Tracy,” she said suddenly. “I need to talk to her.”
Aiden frowned instantly. “She’s still recovering. I don’t think she wants to see anyone right now.”
“She was my best friend, Aiden,” Cassia said, her voice trembling slightly. “She’ll talk to me. She’s the only one who knows where my family is. And tomorrow is the full moon and I-”
She stopped herself just in time, pressing her lips together. She ad almost revealed too much…about the cure, about her plans.
“Please, Aiden,” she said quietly, lowering her tone. “I have to secher.”
Aiden studied her face for a moment before sighing. “Alright. Be you’ll have to come home with me tonight.”
Cassia blinked, her heart skipping a beat. “To do what?” she asked cautiously, her voice low.
“To see her,” he replied quickly. “She’s staying at my house.”
Realization washed over her, and she felt her cheeks warm slightly. She had thought he meant something else entirely.

Embarrassed, she bit the inside of her lip and looked away. “Oh yeah. Sure,” she muttered, her voice softer now.
Aiden’s eyes lingered on her for a moment longer-tracing her face, her expression – before she turned and walked away down the corridor. Her scent drifted behind her, Vanilla and something sweet, making his chest tighten. He watched until she disappeared around the corner, then exhaled and rubbed and down his face.
He was about to turn back toward Ethan’s ward when he noticed familiar figure striding down the hallway his father, Alpha Alaric.
Alaric looked furious, phone pressed to his ear. His sharp voice echoed through the hall.
“Find her, or I’ll kill you myself!” he barked before hanging up and shoving the phone into his pocket.
“Dad,” Aiden called, his tone cautious.
Alaric turned sharply, surprised. “Aiden.” His expression softence just slightly, though tension still clung to his features.
“Who were you talking to?” Aiden asked, folding his arms. “And who are you trying to find?”
Alaric let out a dry chuckle, clearly forcing it. “No one important Just a business partner who thought it was a good idea to
cross me.”
Aiden tilted his head, watching him closely. His wolf stirred, sensing the lie immediately. He could hear the uneven beat of Alaric’s heart. Whatever his father was up to, it wasn’t business and it wasn’t harmless.
“Dad,” Aiden muttered, narrowing his eyes.
But Alaric only gave him a dismissive wave. “I need to talk to you” he said instead, changing the subject.
“I’m listening,” Aiden replied, his voice flat.
Alaric hesitated, as if debating how much to say. He’d wanted to tell Aiden about Amelia – about the cure she possessed – but he knew his son wouldn’t believe him. Aiden always sided with her. Always. So instead, he smirked to himself, deciding to keep his plans close to his chest.
“Well?” Aiden asked, impatient. “What is it?”
Alaric sighed dramatically. “You haven’t come to see your mother since she fell sick.”
Aiden exhaled through his nose. “I’ve been busy.”
“Busy?” Alaric scoffed. “Busy chasing Amelia around, you mean
Aiden’s jaw clenched, eyes flashing dangerously.
“Your mother needs you,” Alaric pressed. “She’s weak, Aiden. She asked for you.”
Aiden let out a bitter laugh. “Where was she when I needed her? he shot back, voice raw. “She’s lived her life perfectly fine without me, Father. She’ll survive a few more days the same way
Memories flickered in his mind – cold halls, empty birthdays, s mother’s perfume fading as she left for yet another trip without even saying goodbye. The ache that came with those memories made his chest tighten. He didn’t want to think about it. Not now.
“If that’s all,” he said stiffly, “I’ll be going back to my son who, by the way, is awake now.”
He turned to leave, but Alaric’s voice stopped him cold.
–
“Ethan is not your son,” his father said quietly. “And he never will be.”

Alaric’s tone was calm, but his words were poison. “He’s an abomination-born of another man’s blood. You should return him to his real father and focus on your duty. You will get married and give this pack a true heir.”
The silence that followed was deafening.
Aiden’s fists clenched at his sides, nails biting into his palms. He wanted to punch the smug look off his father’s face, but he forced himself to breathe instead.
Alaric didn’t wait for a response. He turned sharply and strode away, his coat brushing behind him.
Aiden stood there for a long time, chest rising and falling with anger. Ethan is my son. No matter what anyone says.
But his father’s words dug deep, festering like a wound he couldn’t ignore. His mind replayed Alaric’s earlier taunt – about Arthur being his real son.
What if… he was right?
He ran a shaky hand through his hair, his thoughts spiraling. Arthur and I look too much alike for it to be coincidence. What if Amelia never lost the pregnancy?
His throat tightened, confusion swirling with fear and disbelief.
“Maybe it’s time I find out the truth,” he muttered under his breath, his voice hardening.
“Maybe it’s time I do a DNA test… and confirm it myself.”
