Evening had settled, painting the sky in strokes of orange and vielet when Cassia finally stepped out of the hospital. The day had been long, draining, and she could still feel the faint ache in her temples. Her car keys dangled between her fingers as she leaned against the hood, glancing around the almost-empty parking lot.

She was waiting for Aiden.

He had insisted they go to his house together since Tracy was still recovering there. Cassia wanted-needed-to see her best friend. She’d already called Damien earlier, asking him to bring Arthur home from school.

Now, she stood there quietly, tucking a loose strand of hair behind her ear. The evening breeze brushed against her skin. carrying the faint scent of rain and pine. She adjusted her bag on her shoulder and exhaled, ready to call Aiden again-when she saw him.

He was walking toward her, each step purposeful and heavy with something she couldn’t name. The fading sunlight kissed his face, highlighting the sharp lines of his jaw and the intensity burning in his brown eyes. He looked breathtaking. dangerously breathtaking.

Cassia swallowed hard.

His shirt sleeves were rolled to his elbows, veins visible along his forearms. His hair, slightly tousled by the wind, gleamed under the dusky light. He looked like a man carved from the very fire of the moon itself-confident, powerful, and far too handsome for her peace of mind.

Sometimes, when she looked at him, it hurt. Arthur was his mirror-same eyes, same smile, same tilt of the head. Nature had given her son every piece of Aiden, leaving nothing for her. It wasn’t fair.

Her chest tightened at the thought.

When their eyes met, it was like time hiccupped. For a moment, neither of them moved. But Cassia quickly broke eye contact, pretending to look elsewhere before her heart betrayed her again.

“What took you so long?” she asked, her voice coming out softer than she intended.

“I was with Ethan,” he replied, his gaze lingering on her face longer than necessary. “I called his nanny to stay with him.”

Cassia nodded, clutching her bag tighter.

“So, we’re going in my car, right?” Aiden asked.

She shook her head. “No, mine. I mean… we’ll go separately.”

He frowned. “Amelia-”

“I said it’s fine,” she cut him off.

Aiden sighed, already knowing there was no winning an argument with her. “Fine,” he muttered, walking closer “But if we’re taking your car, then I’m driving”

Her brows furrowed. “What? Why?”

“Because I said so,” he replied simply, extending his hand for the keys.

Cassia stared at him, disbelief flashing across her face. “You can be serious.”

“Dead serious. Just give me the keys”

He took a step closer, lowering his voice in that deep, husky tone that always seemed to crawl under her skin. “We don’t have to argue about everything. Amelia. Just… let me drive.”

Her lips parted as if to protest, but something in his voice-something quiet and worn-made her pause. She stared at him for a moment, then exhaled sharply.

“Fine,” she muttered, digging into her bag. When she handed him the keys, their fingers brushed.

A spark.

A slow burn that licked through her veins, leaving her pulse erratic. She froze, eyes darting up to meet his. For a fleeting moment, the world seemed to fall away-the hum of cars, the wind, everything. There was only him.

His gaze held hers, dark and unreadable. If she didn’t look away she was certain her knees would give out. She swallowed hard and turned abruptly, forcing herself to focus on anything but him.

Aiden moved to the passenger side, opened the door like a gentleman, and gestured for her to get in.

“I can open the door myself,” she said, trying to sound unaffected.

“I know,” he murmured, his lips curling into a faint smile. “But let me be a gentleman once in a while.”

She rolled her eyes but climbed in anyway, feeling his gaze burning into her as he gently closed the door.

“It’s getting late, Aiden. I have to get back to Arthur soon,” she said, shifting in her seat when he still didn’t start the car.

“Yeah,” he murmured, finally moving to the driver’s side. His scent…earthy and warm filled the small space as he slid in beside her. He turned the key, the soft rumble of the engine filling the silence.

“You should put on your seatbelt,” he said.

“I was just about to-”

Before she could finish, he leaned over.

The sudden closeness stole her breath. His face was inches from hers, his breath warm against her cheek. His fingers brushed lightly against her shoulder as he pulled the belt across her chest and clicked it into place.

Her heartbeat thundered in her chest. The air between them thickened-too hot, too charged.

For a moment, Cassia forgot how to breathe. Her palms went clammy, her throat tight. The scent of his cologne-deep masculine, familiar-wrapped around her like a spell she could break. Her body trembled, her pulse racing like wildfire

She felt her lips part slightly, a shiver crawling down her spine. If she didn’t move, if she didn’t look away right now, she would kiss him. Gods help her, she wanted to.

“All done,” he murmured, his voice low, almost teasing.

He pulled back, and she blinked rapidly, forcing herself to focus You didn’t have to do that I could’ve handled it myself.”

“I know,” he said with a faint smirk. “I just wanted to help”

She clenched her jaw, realization dawning He knew exactly what he was doing. The closeness, the teasing-it was deliberate He was toying with her, knowing how her body reacted to his presence, how her heart still betrayed her no matter how hard she fought it.

Cassia frowned, crossing her arms and glaring out the window, etending not to care. But she could feel his smirk. feel the

Without another word, Aiden shifted the gear and pulled out of the parking lot, the car gliding into the dimly lit streets.

Meanwhile, not far from where they’d parked, a man stepped out from behind another car. A camera hung around his neck. the lens still glinting faintly. He scrolled through the photos he’d just taken. Aiden and Cassia standing close, their faces inches apart, his hand brushing hers, the undeniable tension between them captured frame by frame.

A slow smirk curled his lips.

He removed the memory card, slipped it into his laptop, and quickly transferred the images. Within seconds, he had sent them off, to Damien.

Leaning back in his seat, he shut the laptop with a quiet click. The satisfaction in his expression was unmistakable as he started his engine and drove off into the dark, leaving behind a tail of dust and secrets.
