“Then you can stay alone then. I’ll be back…” he said, turning to save.

But before he could take a step, she moved quickly and caught his hand.

“Please stay!”

Her voice cracked, desperate, trembling. Her fingers gripped his wrist tightly as if her touch alone could anchor him. Aiden froze. Slowly, he turned, their eyes locking.

Heat rippled through their wet skin. The contact burned despite the cold rain. She swallowed hard and quickly released him, her heart pounding against her chest like a trapped bird.

He watched her silently. She was scared, he could see it in her trembling lips, the way her eyes darted toward the sky whenever thunder rolled. He didn’t need her to admit it. He knew her too well.

“Amelia…” he said softly.

“I’m scared of thunder,” she whispered finally, her voice small. “Please, just stay. I mean… we can wait till the rain stops, then we’ll find a way to reach James.”

Her words trembled like the rain sliding down her cheeks.

Aiden exhaled heavily, his chest rising and falling. He nodded slowly. His eyes lingered on her face – the way her wet lashes fluttered, her emerald eyes glistening with fear and defiance, her hair clinging to her skin, her lips a soft trembling pink. She looked ethereal. A goddess caught in a storm.

And for a fleeting moment, he wanted to kiss her. To taste the rain off her lips. But he swallowed that thought, hard, forcing the heat down his throat.

“Come on,” he said instead, his voice rough. “Let’s get in the car. You’re soaked. You’ll catch a fever.”

He moved toward her, opened the car’s back door, and motioned for her to enter. She climbed in quickly, hugging herself against the cold.

“Do you have anything dry to wear?” he asked, noticing how she shivered.

She looked around and found a small bag on the car floor. Inside it was a folded blanket – the one she always kept for Arthur in case he fell asleep in the car. She pulled it out and wrapped it around herself, but the blanket quickly dampened from her wet clothes.

“You’ll have to take the wet clothes off,” Aiden said quietly. “Or the blanket will get soaked too.”

Cassia froze. He was right, but stripping in front of him? Impossible.

As if reading her mind, Aiden turned away. “I’ll give you privacy he said softly, closing the door behind him and stepping back into the rain.

Cassia’s heart thudded painfully as she peeled the soaked clothes from her body, the fabric sticking to her skin. She was left in only her bra and panties before wrapping the blanket tightly ound herself. She sank back into the seat, hugging her knees, her breath fogging the window.

Outside, through the streaks of rain, she could see him, standing there, drenched to the bone, refusing to seek shelter

Her chest squeezed. She opened the door a little.

“Aiden,” she called. “You should come in too.”

He turned to her, his hair dripping, his eyes tired but still soft. “an’t. I’m completely soaked.”

She hesitated. “We could share the blanket…”

His brows lifted, surprised. For a second, something unreadable Bashed in his eyes. Then he shook his head.

“No. I don’t want you to be uncomfortable. I’ll be fine. The rain will stop soon.”

Cassia nodded, embarrassed. What had she been thinking? Sharing a blanket, when she was nearly naked underneath? Her cheeks flushed as she watched him move to the front of the car, pening the bonnet to inspect the engine.

Then the sky split open with another deafening clap of thunder

Cassia screamed, her voice cracking through the night.

Aiden’s head snapped up instantly. He slammed the bonnet shut and ran to her side. Opening the door, he found her curled up in the seat, clutching the blanket, her shoulders shaking violently.

“Fuck,” he muttered under his breath. Without a second thought he stripped off his soaked shirt, muscles flexing beneath the cold rain, and climbed into the car beside her.

“Amelia,” he said urgently, his voice softer now. “I’m here. I’m right here.”

He reached for her, pulling her trembling form against his bare chest. She resisted for a second – then melted into him, her face pressed against his skin.

The warmth of his body enveloped her, the steady rhythm of his heartbeat thudding against her ear.

She wanted to push him away. To remind herself of every cruel word, every tear, every betrayal. But the sound of his heartbeat, the scent of him…the same scent that used to lull her to sleep years ago, made her feel something she hadn’t felt in a long time.

Safe.

And that terrified her more than the thunder ever could.

“You don’t have to be scared,” he murmured, his chin brushing against her damp hair. “I’m here now.”

Her eyes softened. Slowly, she closed them, letting the rhythm of his chest calm her racing pulse. Memories surged, Aiden holding her through storms like this before, whispering soft words until she fell asleep.

A fragile smile tugged at her lips as a single tear slid down her cheek.

And then, exhausted, she drifted into sleep against him.

Aiden looked down at her at the woman who once was his world and still was. Rainwater trickled down his temple as he brushed a strand of wet hair from her face. His thumb traced her cheek, tender, reverent.

“It’s always been you, Amelia,” he whispered hoarsely. “It’ll always be you. And I’ll love you always and forever.”

Regret flickered in his eyes as his voice cracked. He had hurt her beyond forgiveness. He didn’t deserve her – not after everything. But his love for her burned so deeply, he doubted it would ever fade.

He’d lost her once, and it had hollowed him. For years, he hadn’ slept right, hadn’t eaten right. Every sunrise had felt empty Every night, he’d dreamt of her face.

And now, holding her again, he realized he would burn a thousand times over just to keep this moment.

Sometimes he saw glimmers of hope, the way her eyes softened when they met his, the taint hitch in her breath when he

touched her. It gave him courage, even if deep down he knew she might never love him again like before.

He’d give up everything… his title, his pack, his pride if she would just let him start over with her.

But she wouldn’t.

And so, he would settle for this… her peace, even if it meant his in.

Damien loved her. Aiden knew that. And maybe that was enough that someone could give her the happiness he couldn’t.

Maybe Amelia was right. It was time to let go. Time to let her live even if it broke him.

Tears rolled freely down his face. He pressed a soft kiss to her forehead, letting the rain mask the sound of his quiet sob.

He looked at her sleeping face – the gentle rise and fall of her chest, the curve of her lips that once smiled only for him.

He memorized her like this as if it might be the last time.

Maybe it was.

Maybe some loves aren’t meant to be healed… only remembered
