Chapter 205
Meanwhile, Damien, who had just walked out of Amelia’s room, descended the stairs and found Beta Greg and Gloria still sitting at the dining table. Their eyes immediately shifted to him sharp and questioning. They had clearly heard the earlierargument.
“Is she okay?” Beta Greg asked, his voice low with concern.
Damien hesitated. Is she okay? The truth was, Cassia was far from it. She was shattered, broken, drowning in grief. But he didn’t want to worry them. He forced a small nod.
“Yes… she’s fine,” he lied quietly.
Beta Greg exhaled and nodded, though the disbelief in his eyes was clear.
Just then, Damien’s phone vibrated in his pocket. He pulled it out and glanced at the screen…Seraphina. His heart tightened.
“Excuse me,” he murmured and walked out of the house, needing air. The cool breeze hit his face as he answered the call.
“Oh, Damien, thank goodness you answered!” Seraphina’s worried voice came through immediately. “I’ve been trying to call you. You weren’t picking up… and I tried calling Cassia too, but her number isn’t connecting!”
Damien sighed, dragging a tired hand through his hair. “Maybe the network’s bad,” he said, his voice calm – but every word from Amelia still echoed painfully in his head.
“Oh, I see…” Seraphina breathed out softly. “She called me yesterday, but I wasn’t with my phone. I’ve been trying to reach her since. Is she okay?”
Damien’s chest tightened. He wanted to tell her the truth, that Cassia had lost her mother, that she was barely holding it together. But Seraphina was too emotional when it came to Cassia. If she knew, she’d rush here, and that was the last thing Cassia needed right now.
“Yes, she’s fine,” Damien said after a pause. “She’s just been busy at the hospital lately. Once she’s free, she’ll call you back.”
There was a long silence on the other end, then Seraphina sighed again. “Are you sure, Damien? I have this… strange feeling she’s not okay.”
Damien clenched his jaw, guilt stabbing deep into his chest. You’re right. She’s not okay. But he couldn’t say that.
“She’s fine, Seraphina,” he said, forcing steadiness into his tone. Just stressed from work, that’s all.”
Another pause, then Seraphina finally agreed and ended the call
The moment the line went dead, Damien lowered his phone slowly and exhaled shakily. He looked up at the sky, eyes clouded.
Cassia filled his every thought. Her tears, her anger, her broken voice. He knew she didn’t mean the cruel things she’d said to him earlier….she was grieving. He understood her pain too welle knew what it felt like to lose a mother. He’d lost his own when he was young. Even now, that emptiness never left him.
The guilt of leaving her alone when she needed him most tore him. I should’ve stayed. He hated himself for walking away, for letting her face this alone. And the thought of Aiden being the one there to comfort her twisted something bitter inside him.
He dragged a hand through his hair again, took a deep breath, a turned back toward the house.
When he reached her room, he knocked softly before pushing the door open.
“Cassia…” he called gently.
To his surprise, she was already dressed….her hair brushed, a clean outfit hugging her figure. She looked distant, her face pale but composed.
“Where are you headed?” Damien asked quietly.
“To the hospital,” she said without looking at him. Her voice was old, detached, a tone that screamed exhaustion.
“Cassia, you just got back from the hospital,” he said, stepping closer. “You need to rest—”
She turned sharply, eyes wet but burning. “Rest?” Her voice cracked. “My mother just died, Damien. Her body is still at the hospital. I have to plan her funeral.”
He froze, watching the pain flicker across her face like lightning.
Racheal kept her gaze fixed outside the window, watching trees ur past. Her fingers fidgeted with the hem of her dress. Since arriving at Red Moon Pack, she’d felt like an outsider. No he spoke to her much, and Aiden…. her supposed fiance, was barely around.
Her heart twisted. She didn’t even know what kind of man she was supposed to marry. She only knows he is the Alpha who has a son and whose wife is dead. She wasn’t originally from this pack so she knows nothing about him.
She glanced briefly at James, who was focused on the road, his face unreadable. She opened her mouth to speak but stopped. Don’t ask. Don’t make it awkward.
She bit her lip and looked back outside.
The car finally pulled up in front of the hospital. James stepped out first, shutting his door with a quiet thud. Racheal followed behind him, her heels clicking against the pavement.
Inside, the scent of antiseptic filled her nose. The air was cold and sterile. She glanced around nervously as James stopped in front of a door.
“This is Ethan’s ward,” he said finally, his voice flat. He opened the door and stepped in, Racheal trailing behind him.
The moment he did, his eyes widened in shock.
“Aiden…” he breathed.
Aiden, who had been sitting by Ethan’s bedside, lifted his head and froze. His eyes locked on Racheal standing beside James. His entire body tensed.
“James,” Aiden said slowly, standing to his full height. “What is she doing here?”
Racheal bowed her head immediately, her voice small and shaky “Alpha Aiden…”
He didn’t respond. He simply stared at her, jaw clenched, anger #ashing behind his eyes. Then, without another word, he brushed past both of them and stormed out of the ward.
James exhaled heavily and followed him out, his stomach tightening with unease.
