Chapter 206
“James, what-” Aiden froze mid-sentence the moment his eyes anded on Racheal standing quietly behind James. His brows furrowed, and his jaw tightened instantly.
“What is she doing here?” he asked sharply, his tone low but dangerous as he rose to his feet.
“Alpha Aiden…” Racheal bowed deeply, her voice trembling slightly. Her hands clutched the hem of her blouse as she lowered her head.
Aiden didn’t respond. His gaze lingered on her for a tense second before he turned away, brushing past her without another word. He stepped out of the ward, and James followed him quickly.
“What is she doing here? Why the hell would you bring her here Aiden demanded the moment they stepped into the hallway. His voice was taut with anger.
“Your father insisted I bring her,” James replied calmly, though his tone carried a hint of irritation. “And I didn’t even know you were here. You left to look for Amelia and never came back. Did you find her?”
Aiden sighed, dragging a hand through his hair. Of course it was his father’s doing. “Yes, I did. She’s with her family now,” he muttered, his voice low.
James exhaled a quiet breath of relief. “And why was your phone not going through?”
“My battery died,” Aiden replied shortly.
James nodded, though his gaze lingered on Aiden’s face, studying him. He could sense the storm brewing behind those calm. brown eyes.
“We need to talk about something,” Aiden said, lowering his voice. “There’s a rogue in this pack. A female rogue. I found her when I went looking for Amelia.”
James’s brows shot up in disbelief. “What? That’s impossible. The borders are heavily guarded. There’s no way a rogue could’ve gotten in.”
“I thought the same,” Aiden said, his tone grim. “But I saw her myself. She’s been here for a while – she even built a small cabin, tucked deep in the forest. She’s been living there unnoticed.”
James frowned, running a hand across his jaw. “Do you think someone smuggled her in? Maybe one of our own?”
“Maybe,” Aiden said quietly. Before he could say more, the ward loor creaked open and Racheal stepped out, clutching her bag tightly to her chest.
Both men turned toward her. She bit her lower lip nervously as Her eyes flickered between them.
“I… I’ll head back home,” she said softly. “I thought maybe I could help with something here at the hospital… maybe spend some time with your son. And with you, Alpha. Since… since well be getting married soon.”
Her voice cracked slightly on the last word.
Aiden’s eyes softened for a brief second. He stared at her… at the nocent look in her eyes, the nervous way her fingers fidgeted and a dull ache of guilt hit his chest. He couldn’t help it wonder what his father had dragged this poor woman into.
She bowed and turned to leave, but Aiden’s voice stopped her.
“Wait.”
She froze and looked back at him.
“I’ll take you home,” he said firmly. “It’s not safe for you to go alone.”
James stepped forward immediately. “You don’t have to. I’ll drop her off myself.”
“No.” Aiden’s tone was commanding, final. James frowned but didn’t argue.
“I need you to do something else,” Aiden continued. “Retrieve Amelia’s car from where she left it. I’ll send you the location. Make sure it gets to her safely.”
James studied Aiden for a moment, realizing the hidden care behind his words, and then nodded reluctantly. “Understood.”
As Aiden and Racheal walked out side by side, James’s gaze lingered on their backs. A thought stirred in his mind….. something unspoken…. but he said nothing.
Meanwhile, Racheal’s heart thudded in her chest. The way Aiden said Amelia’s name, the faint tenderness in his voice… it told her everything. Who is she? she wondered. Who is this woman that makes his voice soften like that?
He was getting married. Again!
She forced herself to blink… once, twice… and then smiled. It wasn’t a real smile; it was sharp, brittle, cold.
“Wow,” Damien said cheerfully, his smirk widening. “A new bride. That’s wonderful news. Congratulations, Aiden.”
Aiden shot him a glare, but Damien only grinned wider. Inside, He was secretly relieved… if Aiden had another woman, maybe he’d finally stay away from Amelia.
Amelia, however, couldn’t hide the storm in her eyes. The jealousy burned hot and ugly, even though she tried to mask it behind indifference. Her chest ached. Her fingers curled tightly around her bag strap.
Racheal stepped forward shyly and extended a hand. “Hello,” she said softly. Her voice was warm, her eyes kind…too kind.
Amelia hesitated before taking it. Racheal’s skin was soft and warm against hers, and that single touch made something flare inside her…something raw, irrational. Something she could not explain.
“Congratulations,” Amelia said, her tone even, though her pulse raced. “Alpha.”
Aiden’s mouth parted slightly, as if he wanted to explain… to tell her it wasn’t what it looked like…but she didn’t give him the chance.
“Come on, Damien,” she said abruptly, her voice tight. She turned, brushing past Aiden, her shoulder grazing his arm. The faint scent of his cologne…that familiar mix of cedarwood and musk mixed with the scent of his wolf…clung to her senses, making her breath hitch.
“I thought you wanted to talk to him?” Damien asked as they walked inside.
“Yeah,” she said sharply. “I changed my mind. I’ll find out who’s behind all of this myself. I don’t need his help.”
And with that, she walked ahead, her head held high – but her heart felt like it was falling apart inside her chest.
