Meanwhile, it was evening, and Cassia had just finished administering the day’s final dosage to most of the patients. She lingered in her office afterward, deciding to go over the symptoms of the strange disease one more time. Her desk was cluttered with papers, her laptop screen glowing faintly as she typed, researched, and cross-checked old medical notes.
She sighed. She had been at Red Moon Pack for too long, tangle in its messes, and had barely made progress toward her true mission. Her mother was still missing, and her family was still out there somewhere, and she didn’t know if they were alive or dead. No. They’re alive, she told herself firmly. She could feel it in her bones. And when she found them, she wanted to already have the cure in hand.
She bent closer to the screen.
“Burning cough, weakness, slow heartbeat, ashen pallor…” she murmured under her breath, her finger tracing down the page until she reached the final symptom.
Coma-like sleep.
Her chest tightened. That final stage, where the wolf spirit detached, leaving the body cold and unresponsive. It was always fatal at this stage and they might even die.
Her eyes widened as recognition snapped into place. “Veylora…” she whispered.
The name of the disease she had seen once before in her training. And if she was right, she already knew the cure: Aurevra
serum.
Relief and determination flashed through her veins, but it didn’t last long. The serum required one critical component, Dawnfire Blossom. A rare flower that bloomed only at sunrise after a full moon. She leaned back in her chair, exhaling sharply. The next full moon was still a week away. Without it, she couldn’t make the cure.
She closed the laptop with a snap, leaning back in her chair and staring out the window into the night. She couldn’t tell the council yet.
She couldn’t risk anyone interfering. Not until she had the Dawnfire Blossom in her hands, not until she tested the cure herself.
And the first person she intended to test it on was her mother. If she found her mother, the pack would get the cure. If she didn’t… they wouldn’t.
Cassia checked the time, it was past eight. She quickly packed her bag, a small smile tugging at her lips. She had found the cure. She could almost see her mother’s face, healed and alive.
But as she walked out of the hospital, the smile faded. She was heading back to the Miller’s mansion. It was her second night there. Five more nights, she reminded herself, and then she’d be gone.
She reached for her bag, only to groan. “Shit,” she muttered. She hadn’t brought her car. All because Aiden had insisted on driving her earlier. And now, of course, he wasn’t here to pick her up. She pulled out her phone, scrolling through her contacts until she found James’s number, but she hesitated. He was watching Arthur. She couldn’t disturb them.
With a sigh, she shoved her phone back in her pocket and flagged down a taxi.
Minutes later, the car pulled up to the mansion gates. Cassia paid the driver, stepped out, and walked inside. The maids were already setting the dinner table, but her eyes swept the room, searching for James or Arthur. Neither was there.
A small smile tugged at her lips at the thought of her son asleep the guest room. He must have missed her. She certainly
missed him.
She walked down the hall, pushed open the guest room door and froze.
Her breath caught, her hands tightening on the strap of her bag

Arthur’s small frame was curled into his, Aiden’s arm resting profectively over the boy as though shielding him even in slumber. The sight punched the air from her lungs.
Cassia’s first instinct was fury, what the hell was Aiden doing in here? Her jaw clenched, heat flashing through her veins. But as she took another step forward, her anger tangled with something softer, something heavier.
Arthur’s face. Peaceful and Satisfied. She had never seen him sleep so soundly before. Her lips trembled as guilt knotted her chest. For years, she had deprived her son of this, of his real father’s presence. Was she… was she being selfish?
Her eyes shifted to Aiden. He looked exhausted, his chest rising and falling steadily, his features softened in sleep. James had said he hardly slept in his own room with Sofia, he only sleeps in the guest room which was one hers for the main time and sometimes even in his car. He looked like a man who hadn’t known peace in years. And yet here he was, holding her son as if it came naturally.
Cassia’s throat tightened. Memories flooded her. She remembered there were nights when she used to watch him sleep, the way he’d wake and catch her staring, and pull her in for a kiss. She remembered whispering for him to stop, worried Eva would see. A faint, wistful smile curved her lips before she caught herself and forced it away.
“What’s wrong with you, Cassia?” she muttered under her breath scolding herself as she turned sharply away.
She moved to the wardrobe, pulling out a dress and a towel. She needed to shower, to shake off this storm inside her before it consumed her.
She stepped into the bathroom, closing the door behind her. Clothes slipped to the floor, the water of the shower roared to life, and she stepped under it, letting the cascade wash away the urmoil in her chest.
Meanwhile, Aiden stirred. His lashes fluttered open, his body groggy but oddly refreshed. He blinked at the dark window. He hadn’t slept this deeply in years.
His
gaze softened when it fell on Arthur, still asleep at his side. But then his brow furrowed. He couldn’t stay. Cassia would murder him if she found him here.
He carefully slid off the bed, ready to leave when the faint sound of running water reached his ears. He froze, turning slowly toward the bathroom.
His wolf growled low in his chest, restless.
The water kept running.
He stepped forward, hand hovering on the doorknob. His pulse quickened. Cassia wasn’t supposed to be back yet… or was she?
With slow precision, he pushed the door open and froze.
Steam filled the bathroom. Through the mist, he saw her. Cassia beneath the shower, water streaming down her skin, her dark hair plastered to her back. She hadn’t noticed him yet.
Aiden’s breath caught in his throat.
And for the first time in years, he felt completely undone.
