Sofia’s knees buckled as she rushed toward her son, clutching Etan’s limp body with trembling arms. Her sobs came raw and frantic, breaking through the air like shattered glass. She rocked him back and forth, desperate, as though motion alone could coax life back into him.
Her hands fumbled in her pockets, searching for her phone to call Aiden, but when her fingers met only emptiness, the realization hit…her phone had been broken last night. Panic consumed her, her cries louder and shaking with hopelessness.
Cassia turned away, her face carved with anguish. Even if she wanted to save Ethan, her body refused to move. Pain lanced through her chest…if it had been Arthur who’d eaten that food, he would be the one lying there, choking on blood.
Arthur trailed after her, his small hand clinging to the hem of her dress like an anchor.
“Mommy,” he whispered, his voice quivering.
Cassia turned, forcing a smile, bending down to his level. She pulled him tightly into her arms, hugging him as if she’d never let
Arthur’s tiny hands clutched at her dress. “Mommy! Mommy!”
“Yes, sweetheart,” she whispered, brushing the hair from his forehead, forcing calm into her voice.
“Please save Ethan… he’s my-” Arthur stopped himself, his throat closing on the word brother. He couldn’t let her know he already suspected the truth about Aiden being his father, not yet Not until the DNA results came. “He’s my friend, Mommy. Please save him.”
Cassia’s gaze locked with his. Those familiar brown eyes…so much like Aiden’s, pleaded with her, stripping her of resistance. It was like being compelled by something beyond her will.
“Arthur, we should pack our things and leave…” she whispered, but Arthur gripped her hand tighter, refusing to let go.
“Mommy, please save him,” he begged again, tears pooling in his eyes.
Cassia’s chest constricted. If there was one thing she couldn’t bear, it was watching her son cry. His tears tore through her like knives, breaking her resolve piece by piece.
“Fine…” she whispered, the word heavy with resignation.
She strode back to Sofia, shoving her aside with fierce strength. Dropping to her knees beside Ethan, Cassia pressed trembling hands to his clammy skin. His pulse fluttered weakly beneath her touch, breaths shallow and ragged.
“He’s crashing,” she muttered under her breath, her mind racing
She tore off her shawl, folding it quickly and sliding it beneath his head to keep his airway open. Then, with practiced hands. she loosened his collar to give his lungs room to work.
“Stay with me, Ethan,” she whispered, brushing the damp hair from his forehead.
Her eyes darted across the room. She spotted a jug of water on the table, grabbed it, and tilted it gently against his lips. “Small sips. Just small sips,” she coaxed. He choked once, cough blood, then swallowed a little. It wasn’t much, but enough to keep him from slipping further.
Behind her, Sofia trembled. “Is that enough? Will that save him?
Cassia shook her head, her jaw tight. ” do not ask me any fucking question… you don’t deserve to be called a mother!”

She checked his pulse again, it was faint, but still there. That was all she needed. Sliding her arms beneath his frail body, she lifted him carefully, cradling his head against her shoulder.
“He’s not safe yet,” she said firmly, rising to her feet. “We need to get him to the hospital. Now.”
Without waiting for another word, Cassia carried Ethan out of the house, her steps urgent, every second hammering against her chest like a countdown, Arthur trailing behind Her
The chauffeur, startled, threw open the car door. Cassia climbed in with Ethan still clutched against her chest. He helped Arthur inside the car “Drive!” she ordered, her tone sharp as a blade. The car roared to life, speeding down the road, leaving Sofia behind.
Sofia stumbled out of the house, snatching her car keys with trembling hands. She dove into her vehicle and sped after them, her heart pounding louder than the engine.
Outside the hospital ward, Sofia paced like a caged animal, her eyes red and her breaths shallow. Her fingers twisted together in endless circles of panic. Arthur sat silently in a chair, glaring at her through narrowed eyes. When their gazes met, his small face hardened and he looked away.
Inside, Cassia fought relentlessly. Her hands worked with precision, trying to stabilize Ethan. Hemovore Toxin was rare. lethal. The very same poison that had killed Eva. Cassia’s heart clenched as she battled time itself, her own grief mingling with the urgency of saving the boy before her.
Sofia’s mind spiraled. If Amelia tells Aiden what she knows, I’m finished. Done. Stripped of my title, stripped of everything. She pressed her palms hard against her temples. She couldn’t let that happen. Not now. Not ever.
Her eyes flicked to the hallway. She needed help. Only one person could fix this mess for her…Dante.
She spotted a nurse walking past, phone in hand. Sofia rushed forward, desperation dripping from her voice. “Please, can I borrow your phone? Just for a quick call, I’ll be fast.”
The nurse, startled but sympathetic, handed it over. “Of course.
“Thank you,” Sofia whispered, slipping away. Her fingers trembled as she dialed Dante’s number. No answer. She tried again.
On the third ring, he picked up.
“Dante…” she breathed, her words breaking into a sob.
“Sofia? Why are you using a strange number? What happened to your phone?”
“It broke,” she sniffed, panic lacing every syllable.
“I thought you wanted nothing to do with me anymore… you to me to stay away,” Dante said, his voice cold but fraying at the edges.
“I’m sorry…I was being watched,” she whispered, her tone trembling
He went silent, then softer. “Wait… are you crying? What happen?”
“I fucked up, Dante,” Sofia sobbed. “I tried to poison Arthur… but Ethan ended up eating the food.”
“What?” His sharp intake of breath rattled through the line. “Ho is he now?”
“I don’t know… Amelia’s attending to him. But she knows now, nte. She knows everything, about Eva, about me trying to kill her. If she tells Aiden, I’m finished. He’ll kill me.”

He exhaled, heavy and frustrated, but beneath it all his voice trembled with devotion. He could never refuse her. He loves Sofia so much and would do anything for her. “The maid….the one who had poisoned Eva for you… does she still works at the pack house?”
“Yes,” Sofia muttered quickly.
“Fine. I’ll handle it. I’ll fix everything. Stop crying. I’ll take care of this.”
Relief washed over Sofia as tears spilled again. “Thank you, Dan. Please… don’t let me lose everything.”
“I won’t,” he promised. His voice hardened. “For you, I’ll do whatever it takes.”
The line went dead.
Sofia clutched the phone to her chest, her breath ragged, her eyes flickering with fear and a twisted kind of hope.
For now, she had bought herself time.
