**TITLE: He Returned to Break and Own Me and for His Queen**
**Chapter 142: The “Surprise”**
As the evening unfolded, the atmosphere at dinner was electric, with Luna undeniably at the heart of it all. Her laughter rang out like music, and her words danced lightly through the air, drawing everyone into her orbit. The warmth of the moment enveloped her, filling her with a sense of belonging—until, suddenly, everything shifted.
Her gaze fell upon three figures emerging from behind Ethan, and in an instant, the joy that had lit up her face evaporated, replaced by an icy mask of dread.
“Long time no see, Luna,” one of them called out, their voice dripping with false sweetness.
“Luna, we finally found you! It wasn’t easy tracking you down after all these years,” another chimed in, the words laced with an unsettling familiarity.
A chill swept through Luna’s veins, leaving her frozen in place. Her heart raced, and her breath caught in her throat as she met the gaze of a pair of eyes that sparkled with wicked amusement. In the next heartbeat, a woman, theatrically sweet in her demeanor, closed the distance and enveloped Luna in a suffocating embrace.
The moment their bodies connected, Luna was assaulted by a nauseating stench, a reminder of everything she had tried to forget. She instinctively recoiled, pushing the woman away, desperate to reclaim her space.
“What’s the matter, Luna? Don’t you remember us?” the woman cooed, her voice a sickly-sweet melody. “I’m your aunt. This is your uncle. And this is Henley.”
Fists clenched tightly at her sides, Luna felt the weight of her past crashing down on her. Of course, she remembered. How could she forget?
After Niall’s passing, Rory had dragged her back to the Frost family home, a place that felt more like a prison than a refuge. The house, once a symbol of familial love, had been bought long ago, and now it stood as a testament to the Frosts’ disdain for her. Her parents had used the money from Rory’s marriage to secure a home for their son, Steven Frost, and his wife, leaving Luna to endure the fallout of their choices.
Every time Rory brought her to that house, she was burdened with heavy bundles, only to be met with her grandmother’s relentless demands.
“Henley’s preparing for university,” her grandmother would say. “What’s wrong with you doing a few chores? We raised you, and look at you—what have you gained?”
Rory would stand up for her when he was around, but even he was eventually sent off to the fields, leaving her vulnerable. After Niall’s death, they were left without any support. In the Frost household, she was constantly subjected to scorn and ridicule.
Though Niall and Rory had contributed to the house, they were relegated to sleeping on the living room floor, enduring Chloe’s disdainful glares. Henley, with his venomous words, would curse her in hushed tones, calling her illegitimate, urging her to leave his home.
The Frost parents were frail and aging, and Rory, trying to care for them, would insist to Luna that they were all one family, urging her to endure the torment.
One evening, after a long day of studying, Luna had stepped into the shower, seeking solace. But as she peeled off her coat, she was met with those cold, snake-like eyes, watching her from the doorway.
Rory had tried to defend her during a confrontation with Steven, who favored Henley. “He didn’t mean anything by it,” Steven had insisted, dismissing Luna’s suffering. Chloe, with her painted black nails, had pointed at Luna, accusing her of moral corruption, claiming she was the reason for her son’s poor thoughts.
Luna had cried, pleading for relief, and finally, Rory had led her away from that suffocating nightmare.
Steven flashed a grin, revealing yellowed, stained teeth. “I always knew Luna would turn out well. Look at her now—Mr. Holloway’s girlfriend, still a top student at Jindiwood University. I hear she’s aiming to be a great doctor, too?”
“Luna now has a new family. You wouldn’t just ignore us, would you?” Henley’s eyes glinted coldly as he smiled, the malice behind his words unmistakable.
Luna swallowed her discomfort, forcing a smile that felt like a grimace. “Of course not. I only recently reconnected with my family, and with school keeping me busy, I haven’t had the chance to visit. Now that we’re finally together, it’s wonderful.”
The last words tasted bitter on her tongue, each syllable a struggle.
“Let’s sit, have the waitress bring the food, and we can chat while eating,” she suggested, eager to diffuse the tension.
“All right, all right! We’ve been on that rusty train for two days—we’re starving!” Henley exclaimed, his voice a mix of eagerness and entitlement.
As they settled at the table, the Frost family descended upon their food with no semblance of decorum. They devoured their meals with a ravenous greed, slurping and clattering their forks as if they were animals.
Luna felt a wave of nausea wash over her, unable to bring herself to pick up her fork, disgusted by their behavior.
Leo and the others, however, seemed unfazed. They had come from humble beginnings themselves, and after all, these were the family of their lifesavers. They were tolerant, checking if the Frosts had enough to eat, offering to fetch more if needed, all while Luna sat in silence, her heart heavy with the weight of her past.
