Randolph glanced at his brother’s wrist–which was, truth be told, thicker than Cormac’s- and smirked. “Let’s take it to the hospital director.”

“But he’s the department head,” Bryan replied, playing along. “The hospital director might just cover it up for him.”

“Then we’ll go higher,” Randolph said smoothly. The Inspector General’s Office. The Department of Health and Human Services. And if that doesn’t work, we’ll go straight to the state level–maybe even reach out to rival hospitals. Once the media catches wind of it, the story will spread like wildfire.”

Oriana blinked in surprise, a flicker of amusement in her eyes.

Who would’ve thought the usually upright, serious elders could be so sharp–tongued–and so quick to turn the tables?

Cormac’s eyes bulged, red with rage.

His fists clenched so tightly that his knuckles turned pale. At last, he lowered his head, his voice tight with suppressed anger. “It was… my negligence,” he ground out. “I apologize to both of you.”

At that moment, William sauntered over, still holding the packet of dried fish. “Hey, old coot, what about me?” he teased. “Where’s my apology? What’s with that look? You brought this on yourself. We’re actually giving you a chance to save face–you should be thanking us.”

Cormac nearly lost it right there. Every nerve in his body screamed to explode.

Cormac spun around, his eyes blazing. “What more do you want?”

William narrowed his eyes, a faint smile tugging at his lips. “About what happened today–I trust you won’t hold a grudge? You won’t, say, exclude Oriana from consideration for the top journal submissions, right?”

Cormac gave a cold, mirthless laugh. “Whether she gets selected or not is another matter entirely.”

William raised an eyebrow, refusing to back down. “Of course–but if her draft ranks above the rest, can you promise to be fair and impartial?”

With so many witnesses, Cormac had no choice. Backing down now would only make him look worse.

From where Leo stood, he could only see the backs of their heads–both broad–shouldered, with the sturdy build of men who’d once been physically trained. For a fleeting moment, something about their silhouettes struck him with a strange familiarity.

For an instant, the outlines of those men seemed to blur and overlap with Niall.

“Leo, what are you looking at?” Luna’s voice broke his reverie.

He flinched and turned back to her. “Luna, do you recognize those men?”
