Chapter 295 The Real One
Chapter 295 The Real One
Even the gift Oriana had sent was simple yet thoughtful, never flashy or showy.
Before he knew it, Xander had finished the entire bowl of soup.
Half an hour later, warmth spread through him, and his eyelids grew heavy.
Soren exchanged a glance with Elena, who immediately understood and went downstairs.

Luna and Grant stood up the moment they heard movement, their eyes darting toward the staircase. “Is Mr. Stone finished with his business?” Luna asked quickly.

Elena shook her head with polite regret. “Mr. Stone and his guest are still discussing important matters. They said it might take a while. Mr. Stone didn’t want to delay you two, so perhaps it would be better to come another day.”
Her words were courteous, but the meaning was unmistakable. She was driving them out.
It was just phrased nicely.
Luna hadn’t expected Xander to be so cold, to refuse to even see her after she’d come all this way. He hadn’t given her the slightest bit of face.
She thought bitterly of his promises–how he used to speak of Niall’s heroism, how he’d vowed to take care of Niall’s family.
So this was his idea of “taking care“?
One request, and he cut ties completely?
And in front of Grant, too–how humiliating. She had wanted to show that she and Xander were close, that she was someone who mattered in his circle. Now the illusion was shattered.
Still, she dared not say a word. Forcing a strained smile, she said softly, “It’s my fault. I should have called ahead. Showing up unannounced must have put Mr. Stone in an awkward position.”
Turning to Grant, she tugged his sleeve gently. “Grant, let’s go, He’s too busy today. We shouldn’t make things harder for him.”
Grant’s face tightened, clearly unhappy about leaving without a meeting.
“It’s fine, Luna. We don’t have any other plans today; we dan wait.”
Her expression froze. She leaned closer
whispering quickly, “Grant, you saw it yourself. The neighbors just now couldn’t even get past the door. Mr. Stone rarely sees visitors while he’s recovering. We’d only be forcing him if we stay, and that won’t leave a good impression. Let’s come back next time, all right? Just
listen to me.”
Grant hesitated.

Comparatively, Luna still seemed to have more standing with Xander than anyone else.
At least she’d been allowed in for coffee, unlike those neighbors who’d been turned away entirely.
After a moment’s thought, he sighed. “All right. We’ll go.”
“Good.”

Luna looped her arm through his and smiled politely at Elena. “Please give Mr. Stone our best regards, and make sure he receives these gifts.”
Elena paled and waved her hands in panic. “I can’t, Ms. Sterling. I don’t have the authority to accept gifts for him.” The more Luna insisted, the more anxious Elena became, until she was nearly in tears.
In the end, Luna had no choice but to take back the packages to their car exactly as they came.
She could barely maintain her smile and drove away with Grant in frustration.
By the time their car disappeared down the lane, Soren came downstairs.
“Let Mr. Stone rest through lunch,” he said. “He finished all the meat in that soup. We’ll fix him something light this afternoon.”
Elena nodded quickly.
Xander slept until nearly four.
When he came downstairs, the sky outside had turned gray, and the temperature had dropped again. It looked like snow was on its way.
Soren met him immediately, visibly excited. “Sir, there’s news about Niall’s child–the one you asked me to find!”
He continued, “My men went to Niall’s hometown and made inquiries at the local clinic. Apparently, one of his old comrades passed through not long ago and mentioned that Niall’s biological daughter has been found. They said she’s living right here in Jindiwood.”
Though he had slept, fatigue still clung to Xander’s mind. At those words, however, his eyes sharpened.
He suddenly paused halfway down the stairs. “You’ve found her?”
Fearing he might fall, Soren hurriedly stepped forward. “They didn’t get all the details,” he admitted, “but we’re tracking down the comrade who left the message. Once we find him, we’ll know exactly who she is.”
“How long will it take?”
“After the holidays at most. It won’t take long,” Soren said.
Xander nodded and stepped into the backyard. “Good.”
“Still,” Soren added carefully, following close behind, “we don’t know her character. What if she turns out

to be another Luna…?”

Xander was silent for a moment before replying. “Luna grew up without parents, and she suffered plenty. I asked you to find this child because I don’t want her living in the same misery or worse. Whether she’s good or bad, we’ll see for ourselves. Niall has been gone for years. I owe it to him to make sure his real daughter is safe.”

Moreover, Xander had his principles. Since he had helped the wrong girl, he would find the real one and finally bring the story to an end.
