Micah didn’t listen. Enduring the throbbing at his temples, he strode quickly towards the exit.
Oriana had gotten off work early. Knowing Micah was in a meeting, she spontaneously decided to meet Lily for a stroll at a supermarket near the university.
Surrounded by several colleges, the supermarket had a wide variety of items, especially… pre- made meals.
Yes, that was right.
Oriana was planning to cook herself. Of course, regular cooking was a bit challenging for her, so she’d start with simple, quick pre–made dishes.
Confidently, she bought several different dishes. Returning home and changing clothes, she immediately got to work.
The moment Micah stepped out of the elevator, he smelled something burning.
His face fell. “Honey!”
He rushed into the apartment, bumping right into Oriana, who was coughing her way out.
Micah pulled her without another word, heading outside. “There’s a fire! Let’s get out first!”
1
Oriana quickly grabbed him. “No, no, it’s not a fire. I was cooking.”
Micah was stunned. 1
Oriana said, “The heat was just a bit too high. It got a little burnt.”
Micah’s wildly pounding heart gradually calmed. “As long as you’re okay!” He touched her cheek, smudged with soot. “If you’re hungry, have a snack or order takeout. Leave the cooking
to me.”
Micah moved to take over the ‘firefighting mission‘ in the kitchen, rolling up his sleeves to go in.
To him, this was something he should be doing.

But Oriana wrapped her arms around him from behind, carefully unfolding the cuffs he had just rolled
“I’m almost done! It’s just the last dish that’s a tiny bit tricky, but it’s no problem. I can handle it myself!”
Without another word, Oriana pushed him towards the bedroom, using a tone one might use with a child. “Go change into your loungewear. Dinner in five minutes!”
Micah was utterly helpless against her, letting himself be manipulated like a puppet.
He was utterly devoted to her.
Chubby had activated emergency protocols on its own. All the smart windows in the kitchen opened, the gas was cut off, and soon, the smoky haze in the apartment was cleared out.
By the time Oriana went back in, the kitchen was spotless, with no trace of the earlier fiery chaos.
Gathering her resolve, she heated oil again and carefully poured it sizzling over the fish topped with pre–chopped scallions and bell peppers. A fresh, savory aroma filled the kitchen.
By the time Micah changed and came out, Oriana had already set the dishes and the soup on the table. Steamed perch, sweet and sour pork, sour soup with beef, plus a pork stomach and chicken soup. It was quite a feast.
Micah stopped at the dining table, his expression clearly showing surprise and hesitation.
“These… you made all these by yourself?”
“Mhmm.”
Oriana rubbed her nose with her index finger, making a proud little expression. “Doesn’t it smell great? Am I amazing?”
Micah saw through it immediately. “Mhmm, amazing. Honey, and… the kitchen’s air fryer and microwave, all worked hard.”
Oriana stared in disbelief. “You haven’t even tasted it! How did you know I just heated them up?”
Micah thought for a moment, choosing his words. “These dishes… none of them are easy.”
He meant she couldn’t have pulled off such difficult dishes all at once on her own.

Actually, Micah could also tell the difference in smell compared to freshly stir–fried dishes; the aroma lacked that certain depth from proper wok heat.
Oriana deflated. “Ah, I thought you’d be blown away by my cooking skills!”
Micah played along, sitting down. “You personally prepared a meal for me. I’ll finish it all.”
Only then did Oriana smile again, “Well, I just added water to the soup twice and heated the oil for the fish. Pre–made meals are pretty convenient, actually, just not as healthy…”
“Mhmm. For times when you’re in a hurry or don’t feel like cooking, it’s okay to try them occasionally.”
“But, when it comes to cooking, just leave it to me. You work hard; you should rest properly when you get home.”
No sooner had he finished praising her than he steered the topic back again.
Was he afraid she’d try this a second time?
Oriana took a big sip of the strongly artificial–tasting pork stomach soup and stayed silent.
Micah’s slow–simmered soups were still far superior!
“Alright, just this once! It won’t happen again! I just thought today was worth celebrating.”
Hearing the happiness in her tone, Micah congratulated her again. “Congratulations. You truly deserve it.”
Oriana lifted her soup bowl and gently clinked it against Micah’s, her eyes smiling. “It’s all thanks to your help. Even Mr. Harris praised my article as outstanding, and the judges gave very high marks. I got full marks, you know.”
Micah’s tone was deeply affectionate. “I merely offered a few pointers. It’s your own brilliance that allowed our spirits to work in perfect harmony, blending the ideas seamlessly.”
Oriana blinked. “Correct me if I’m wrong, but that sounds like a very roundabout way of saying we have an innate connection.”
