When everyone entered the ward, Kenny was still half–asleep, napping again.

He had a few minor injuries here and there, his buzzcut making him look more like a soldier than the carefree boy he used to be. The doctor’s words still echoed in everyone’s minds, and Niamh’s emotions finally broke. She sat down by his bed and began to cry uncontrollably. “My poor boy, what will you do from now on?”
Startled, Kenny’s eyes flew open.
Seeing his mother in tears nearly scared him to death. “Dad? Mom? What are you doing here- and why are you crying? I’m fine! Seriously, I’m fine!”
Cordell’s expression was grim. Being a man himself, he thought Kenny was just pretending to be strong.
He stepped closer, resting a heavy hand on his son’s shoulder, and spoke in a deep, heartfelt voice. “Kenny, it’s okay to cry. If you need to, just cry. My arms are always open for you.”
“Who said I want to cry? I’m too busy laughing!” Kenny blurted, his face dead serious.
Niamh hugged his head tightly, sobbing. “Kenny, don’t hold it in. We already know that you might not be able to”
She couldn’t even finish the sentence. The words stuck in her throat, too cruel to say out loud.
But Kenny waved a hand nonchalantly, leaning back against the headboard. “Oh, that! Not being able to have kids or have sex? Big deal! I’m thrilled! Finally, I’ve got the perfect excuse- you guys can’t force me into one of those fancy arranged marriages anymore. Honestly, this might be the best news I’ve ever gotten!”
Cordell’s face darkened immediately.
Niamh’s tears froze midstream.
Noah, Micah, and Oriana–standing by the bed–couldn’t even look.
Kenny was asking to be beaten. And sure enough, he got what he asked for.
After giving him that beating, Cordell and Niamh no longer felt upset or gloomy–they were refreshed, clear–headed, and completely satisfied.
They’d been on edge all day, terrified their son might break down psychologically.

Now that they realized he was perfectly fine, they figured a little trauma wouldn’t hurt him.
Once the storm had passed, Noah cleared his throat and told Cordell and Niamh about all the promises he’d made to Kenny earlier that day.
Cordell’s jaw tightened as he forced out, “Since you already agreed, Father, we’ll do as you said.”
Niamh felt dizzy just listening.
Well, now look at that–Niamh wouldn’t be holding any grandkids in the future, and even her son had got the perfect excuse to be a total slacker.
Maybe it wasn’t too late for her and Cordell to try for another child?
Still, she couldn’t let it go. She sat down again, eyes shining with desperate hope. “Kenny, think carefully. Try to remember–was there ever a moment you might’ve lost control? Maybe you were confused, or someone could’ve gotten pregnant?”
For a split second, guilt flickered across Kenny’s face. He nearly bit his tongue trying to deny it. “Wh–what? No way! I’ve never messed around!”
Niamh let out a wail of regret. “Oh, heavens if I’d known, I would’ve let you mess around! Maybe we’d have a few secret grandkids by now. But this way—nothing!”
Kenny sat there, dumbstruck.
Oriana, watching quietly from the side, caught the flash of awkwardness on Kenny’s face. Then she suddenly remembered what Clara had said before–the last time.
Could it be?
“Alright, enough,” Noah stepped in to smooth things over. “Kenny’s already got enough on his plate. Don’t make it worse for him. Besides, there’s still hope. If he follows treatment properly, maybe there’s a chance. Don’t put too much pressure on him.”
Niamh sniffled and nodded. “Yes.”
Cordell added, at just the right moment, “Don’t worry, Dad. Even if Kenny can’t, well, we still have Micah and Oriana. They can give the Caldwell family its next heir.”
Noah only murmured a vague okay.
Oriana stood quietly, obedient as ever, saying nothing.
Micah’s gaze was steady, unreadable.

By nightfall, Kenny was scheduled to stay another day for a full check–up. Cordell and Niamh decided to remain at the hospital, while Oriana and Micah escorted Noah back to Jindiwood Garden.
They stayed for dinner at the Caldwell estate before heading home.
Before they left, Noah took Oriana’s hand and sighed.
“Oriana, today went smoothly thanks to you.”
“Mr. Caldwell, it’s really fine,” she said quickly. “Kenny’s family. Of course, we’d be there for him.”
“Good girl. You’re thoughtful,” Noah said warmly, then hesitated before adding, “About what Cordell said at the hospital–don’t take it to heart.”
“I do want great–grandkids, sure,” he admitted with a small laugh. “But that’s just me being an old man who likes to talk. I’d never force you two. You young people have your own goals, your own plans. Follow what feels right to you. Don’t ever let yourself feel pressured or wronged.”
“Mr. Caldwell?”
Oriana hadn’t really thought much about it before. She’d just been accepted into grad school and had plenty to focus on.
And besides, Micah had always taken precautions.
But hearing those words directly from Noah still warmed her heart.
