Niamh’s gaze dimmed. “If I had known things would turn out like this, I never would’ve said that.”

What the hell? So Mom adjusts her standards depending on the person?

“Besides,” Niamh continued, “that girl might seem careless and brash, but she’s not that bad.”

“You’ve only met her once,” Kenny snapped. “Do you even know what kind of person she is?”

He almost blurted out that Zara had slept with him and then asked for money right after.

But at the last second, he swallowed the words back down.

He knew saying that would ruin his parents‘ impression of Zara.

Wait a damn second, Kenny–what’s wrong with you? Why are you still defending that woman’s dignity at a time like this?

Kenny clutched his head and slammed it against the wall in frustration.

Cordell frowned deeply. As the head of the family, he spoke in a low, firm voice. “Your mother wasn’t wrong. That child might be our family’s only hope. No matter what, it’s best if it can be born.”

He paused before adding, “And if that girl were really some gold–digging opportunist, she wouldn’t have come to you to ask for abortion money. She’d have kept the pregnancy a secret until she was further along -or even waited until after giving birth to blackmail the Caldwell family.”

Kenny was so mad he nearly coughed up blood. “You think that’s what she wanted? She didn’t even think that far!”

“That’s enough,” Cordell cut him off. “This isn’t for you to decide. We’ll handle it.”

After leaving the hospital, Zara had barely gotten into the car before dragging Oriana into gossip. “So tell me everything about Kenny,” she demanded eagerly.

Oriana had no choice but to spill.

“Oh my god, Clara again?” Zara gasped, rubbing her chin in disbelief. “How thirsty is that woman for Kenny? One time wasn’t enough–she had to come back for round two?”

Micah, who had been quietly driving, suddenly spoke up. “The Martin family lost over a billion in their overseas investments. They want to use Clara in a marriage alliance, and that’s why she set her sights on Kenny.”

Zara’s eyes widened. “Ah, that explains it. Makes sense. Between those bloated old tycoons and Kenny, he’s definitely the better–looking choice.”

Then suddenly, something clicked in Zara’s head. She sat upright and stared straight at Micah. “Hold on. You just said Clara’s after Kenny because she wants to fix her family’s billion–dollar loss?”

Micah nodded. “Yes. The Caldwell family’s domestic ventures are already well–established, and Cordell has developed nearly half of their overseas businesses. If the two families were to unite through marriage, the Martin family’s problems would disappear overnight.”

“Wow. So they can actually solve à multi–billion–dollar crisis just like that?” Zara confirmed.

Oriana immediately sensed where her friend was heading. Her expression darkened. “Zara, if Mr. Radcliffe and the others found out you were sacrificing your own happiness for the company, they wouldn’t-”

Zara interrupted her lazily, flashing a mischievous grin. “Oriana, as long as you don’t tell and I don’t tell, how would they ever find out?”

“Zara-”

“Relax,” Zara said, smiling easily. “I know what you’re worried about. But honestly, this feels like a good deal to me.”

She pursed her lips, her thoughts already clear and sharp.

“I’ve never had any grand ambitions. I just want to live like a laid–back slacker–eat, drink, play, enjoy life. And now, this baby’s basically a huge gift dropped straight from the sky. Maybe it’s God’s plan, you know?

“Cordell and Niamh want a child. I want money and comfort. Everyone gets what they need. Seems fair to

“This might be the only real contribution I’ll ever make to my family,” she added softly.

Then she smiled, looking at Oriana with a teasing glint. “And best of all, you’ll be my baby’s aunt. Knowing she’ll grow up with you around makes me feel totally at ease.”

It only took a few words for Oriana to realize Zara had already made up her mind.

She wasn’t Zara–she couldn’t decide for her.

With that, Zara closed the door, and the hotel concierge politely carried her luggage downstairs.
